Well I got through the weekend, and I gotta give credit were credit is due. He did not drink this weekend like I thought he would, however he did smoke. I know my guard is still up and I still don't trust the fact he wont drink.
It's been 2 weeks so now do I let my guard down do I trust again, this has happened before only not as long. How long do you wait before anyone can trust an alcoholic's word again. I don't want a life of just waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Hi I have experienced the walikng on eggshells of my ah being sober and slipping about 6-7 times, my advice is to have faith in him, you know what he is capable of accomplishing and not but just dont get your hopes too high because i speak from my experience but i wound up feeling stressed betrayed and like a failure like i didn't have the magical power or enough love to make him quit.
In my personal opinion/experience you can never trust an alcoholic. My ah has went as long as 2 months and just when I started to relax and enjoy having my sweet husband back...bam! It started all over again :(
Yes, you have to learn to trust yourself and your instincts. Al-anon can help with changing your focus from the AH to you. Only you can take care of you. If you have all you "ducks in a row", then what he does won't effect your life as much.
Hugs!
Trust yourself. Take your focus off of him. He is going to do what he is going to do...your peace of mind should not be dependent upon his choices. If he stays sober, great. If he does not, so what? Will you really be that shocked? Really?
Alcoholics are not trustworthy because they have virtually no control over their urge to drink unless they have had a spiritual awakening or have learned an effective coping mechanism to take the place of booze. If he is "white knuckling" it, the chances are he will drink again. Your choice is how much will this affect your peace of mind? Be positive, hope for the best but be realistic. Again, the more you focus on your own life and your own happiness, the less his behavior will affect you.
