My husband has been a hard core alcoholic for the past 2-3 years to the point where when he is off the wagon its like his job. He's been to rehab and was sober a few months and now its just a constant roller coaster; a few weeks good, a few weeks bad. When he is sober things are great, but when he's not its so frustrating. I feel like i have to babysit him all the time, he drives way too drunk sometimes, he won't eat or shower or take care of himself unless i make him. It's hard to watch him be like that...I've seen him lose a lot of weight during his binges because he just doesn't eat hardly anything. I've heard people say detach, but i don't know how. I also fear that when i detach, I worry I'll detach too much and it'll ruin our marriage, although of course with all this our marriage isnt great anyways. But i love him so much, but its one of those situations that is hard to be in and hard to walk away from. I find myself getting so bitter and resentful at times and sometimes i feel so angry like i want to yell, but i know that doesnt fix anything and doesnt help the situation nor myself...so how do you cope? Just one of those things that you find yourself asking "when is enough enough" and i know the books and everything say to put yourself first, it's just alcoholism is like being next to a black hole, it sucks you in, and it's such a negative environment. he wakes up at all hours of the night to keep drinking which wakes me at all hours...i just feel so overwhelmed and over it, yet sad for him at the same time.
thanks to all for listening. sometimes you just need to vent.
I feel ya. My husband is a functioning alcoholic. He only drinks towards the end of the day and drinks anywhere from 12-18 beers at a time.
I practice Muay Thai martial art and compete in it. That's my outlet for right now. But I am stepping back and putting my foot down telling my husband. I'll back off competing if he is willing to stay sober. Give and take. I have been thinking about I a lot late, when is enough enough? When will I walk away? What are my boundaries?
As long as he is progressing towards sobriety I think I'm ok. If he is showing effort ad going days and weeks sober for longer and longer periods I'm ok. It's when he won't make changes and won't get help and won't make effort I'm backing out. So far he has made hives leaps over the last 6 months because I packed my bags and left them by the door. He now knows I'm serious.
With our kids ages 6 and 3 I will have less tolerance. Kids come first
If there's one bit of advice I can give you, it's to not waste away years with your AH. I've been with mine for almost 17 years and I can count on one hand the number of days he hasn't had a drink. He's been a hard core drinker for well over 14 years now and by that I mean he drinks Wild Turkey 101. He goes through a half gallon every 3 days, not to mention the Vodka. Everyday, I wake up with one man and go to bed with another. Don't make excuses. If you're not happy, make changes. Don't expect him to change. If he wants to change, it has to be what he wants. But don't waste your life thinking he will wake up one day and just quit. Odds are, he won't. As much as I love my AH, I wish I had walked away a long time ago. Being a co-dependent is a horrible way to live.
Good luck to you.
Since you don't know my situation, I'll tell you why. For one thing, co-dependency. For another, he is sick. Also, in the last 19 months, I had to give up my business due to health reasons, I lost my son, had 3 car accidents, had neck surgery and then lost my mom. Actually, all that happened in the space of 13 months. And as much as I hate the disease, I love the man. The longer you stay in the relationship, the harder it is to leave. We do have good days. A lot of them. I hate what it's doing to him physically. It's literally killing him.
I feel your pain you could be talking about my life I have been married for18
Years and he too is sick can not take care of himself. I love him too.
Sometimes we just don't like them anymore. But we still love them.
Bless your heart. Many prayers and hugs we have to take it one day at a time
And try and pray tomarr ow is better then today.
