Hi all! I'm new here. My story is a long one, and I will tell it in due time. Just wanted to put a short introduction out there......I'm the wife of an alcoholic. We've been married 24 years, alcohol has always been a part of our lives, well, part of his, and he's made it a huge part of mine. We have 3 children. While they were young, I would and did protect them from the alcoholism. Now, that they are all older, they witness it first hand. I've wanted to leave for a long time, but wanted to wait until all my children were out of high school to do it. So, this year is the year. My youngest son is a senior. I have started putting money back, buying things I will need for a new place. Only a select few people know about this, and I'm hoping to leave in about 4-5 months from now. Please feel free to ask me anything. When I have more time, as I said before, I will tell my story. Loves and hugs to all who is going thru similar circumstances.....
Welcome!! I've been married to my alcoholic husband 22 years - 23 in June. We have 4 sons together. I wish I could say that my staying in this marriage was protecting them, but I don't know if that is the case. Kudos for you that you're making a plan to remove yourself from the dysfunction! I'm making similar plans that I pray will be temporary, but this will be totally up to my husband when he returns from rehab.
You're being wise. Have you sought a lawyers advice yet?
Great job in taking control if your life and your happiness and well being. So many women suffer from being married to an alcoholic. I swear it's more common than one would think. It's so hard. But realizing you want something better and making those steps towards happiness is wonderful. I have been with my husband ten years and now I'm putting the hammer down. Once I graduate from RN program and make enough money to be on my own, I will 100% leave if he doesn't stay sober. I'm tapping out.
I wish you the best of luck. It's smart to get all your ducks in a row before taking this leap. Stay strong
KatieDarling: I have not gone to a lawyer yet. I'm waiting until after my son's graduation and party before I take that step. Once I do that, it all becomes official and everyone will know my plans. So, for now, I'm laying low, dealing with what gets thrown at me, and just waiting for my day to arrive!
CeeCee4: thank you! I was trapped at home for several years. I was a stay at home mom, and I babysat at home so I could be there with my kids. Once my daughter was about 6 months old, I knew I had to find a way to support myself eventually. So, I, like you, went to school and got a degree (I'm in accounting now) so I can support myself. Good luck to you!!!
