I passed the five year marker back in March, so I'm good now right? Well, not really. At the end of last year I was struggling, and not sure why. So I gave myself the gift of therapy. A friend had told me about this certain kind of therapy that dealt specifically with loss. I remember at the time making a mental note of it and thinking "maybe someday??". Well that someday was here. So I took my birthday money and bought myself an eight week "Grief Recovery Therapy" session. It went hand in hand with "Transformational Breathing". My sessions lasted a minimum of 2 hours and beleive it or not, there was hardly any talking. I had homework and the responsibility for the success of the therapy was totally on me.
My friends would ask me if I liked my therapy NO! I didn't like it, it was one of the most difficult things I have ever willingly gone through. I never wanted to go to my sessions and would lay on the couch for hours afterwards exhausted by all that came up during these sessions. Even as it concluded I did not think that I had benefitted from the experience, until...March 11th when my dad died. He was the last life line that I had, my biggest supporter and the man I had based all relationships on. This time when the grief began to be all consuming I realized I had tools in my bag, tools which I could use to help me process this latest loss.
No matter what stage you are at in your grief journey I recommend that you not take it alone. There is help out there, finding the right fit is a process but don't give up. Here is a link to the type of therapy which I sought out https://www.griefrecoverymethod.com/ and http://transformationalbreath.com/ I still feel that there has to be some good that comes out of so much heartache. If we can use what we have learned about grieving and share it with someone who is in pain then that makes losing Ron somewhat palatable, I said somewhat. Hope this helps, Lori

Hi Lori, Thank you for posting this about the help of Therapy. I am currently at 33 months. I have very little support. I did a brief stint at hospice individual at about 7 months and group at hospice briefly. On New Years Eve Day 2014 I contacted a therapist via email describing myself as suicidal etc.... I received a phone call immediately. I liked him and even got to hold a 2 lb. rescued ground hog during our sessions. Unfortunately, he is moving on and terminated (ugh) his clients in March, including me. I was devastated at the moment, but...he did get me through New Years eve and to March of 2015. I am currently at a crossroads about therapy, because I have not been able to build any kind of supportive network of friends. I have no family that is close or supportive. I agree with you though and have not ruled therapy out because I know I am not where I need to be. It is not easy to find the right match. If I could fly to New York right now and stay, there is the Institute for Complicated Grief, with a specific treatment plan. I would also go to Massachusetts and contact John Nolte, who I saw many years ago in Indiana and he started the Midwest Center for Psychodrama and Socialometry in Indianapolis. I traveled there about three times and he saved my life. He is now in Massachusetts and I have thought about contacting him to see if he would see me, even though he is not doing what he use to do. I will check out the links you have listed. It is work, it is not pleasant, but it is the end result that counts. pj1952

Therapy is "GOLDEN", with the right therapist along with an open honest willingness to share your heart, history and inner most secrets. Glad you found a good fit for you! Kudos & Hugs, D
