My neighborhood has changed. There is a group of juvenile delinquents. They have broken into one neighbors home and basically just ate all their food. (someone came home, caught them, they ran). Two boys keep trying to take another neighbor's cat- and not because they want a pet. Some have tried to pry off my car's hubcaps. Some were on my porch and chiseled off some fresh concrete that was to fill a crack. They throw sticks at one neighbor's dog that's in their backyard. Then there's the new adult neighbor who asked strange questions and explained that he has a chemical imbalance and takes the strongest tranquilizers. Then he asked what I'm going to do with my old convertible- expressing annoyance that it's in my driveway. Yes, the police have been called more than once.
Being alone changes everything. If only Earl was here.
Any safety suggestions are appreciated. I even told some of the kids that I had security cameras and that they are on tape. Didn't seem to faze them. Thanks for reading. Hope I don't sound crazy!

Contact your local board of education office and ask to speak to the department in charge of truancy enforcement. If they are in fact kids, then they are supposed to be in school, and the board of ed may be in a better position to coordinate between the police and the truant officers. Cops tend to pay more attention to other folks in uniform.... Where we lived in Florida, there was a police resource officer assigned to every campus. They worked for the Sheriff's Office just like any other cop, but were assigned to protect and patrol the schools. If your city is similar, contact the officer(s) assigned to the local district schools.
Another option is to contact your local city councilperson's office and talk to their aide. They also can carry more weight to get things done with the police department as they get to vote on the police budgets (money talks).
If there is a strong church in your area, you can try contacting the pastor and ask if there is a youth minister for your area who could help get these kids off the street and back in class.
If you don't get any satisfaction after those attempts, then go to the news media.
I am sorry you are going through this. I would also suggest that you get some pepper spray to keep around for self-defense. If you can't get that where you are, get a can of wasp spray. This is in case someone breaks in and you have to defend yourself, this can incapacitate someone (without killing them) so that you can get away and get help. I keep a can myself as I can't get pepper spray here in England. I don't advocate getting a gun, especially since a lot of home robberies are because criminals are looking for guns to steal.

If it were me I would be looking to move into a community where I felt safe and could grieve in peace. Preferably a condo or apartment with locked security doors and gates.
Is it financially feasible for you to put the house on the market and start looking for a safer home?
Remember, anything that you're going to use against these kids, unless you're prepared to really use it, can and will be used against you.

Can you move? Do you have the option of moving into a secure apartment or a gated community?
If I didn't feel safe or if I didn't live in a security locked apartment, I would definitely buy a handgun, get a permit and take some lessons.
You need to put your peace of mind and safety first.

The whole front of my house is enclosed by a decorative iron gate. When I see solicitors across the street, I just let my dogs out, and no one dares to enter the gate...
They also bark when someone comes to the door...If I dont want to talk to them, I just say, Sorry, cant hear you and close the door.
I thought about getting a gun, but feel my dogs are enough of a deterrent. I have a large knife in my bedside drawer...
The wasp spray sounds like a good idea! We can hide several cans around the the house.
