Pat...You're right, there is little if anything that could be called "normal" for any if us any more...the best way I have heard this described is like the tide coming in and out...I believe this is how your Spirit takes a badly needed rest from the intensity of the physical loss...you have not stopped grieving, and it has not gotten any easier, this is just a temporary respite...but, it is my prayer that you learn to become aware of his Spiritual presence, that is always with you.

I am no expert but I believe this is a way we cope. The intensity of it all becomes too much physically, mentally, and emotionally so we shut down. I too felt numb and also experienced the inability to get anything done. I felt like I was wrapped in super glue . What helped me was contact with family and friends only I was unable to initiate this. When people came over, I would exit my cocoon and be perfectly normal while they were there. After they left I would retreat to my hermit stage.
It did end after my mind finally healed. It was definitely a matter of time in which I had to survive and let myself "be." You will get to that oint later in your journey. For now, accept that you may be different for awhile. Coming to this site was so tremendous for me.

I felt similarly to what Dave described. I was too tired to cry after a while (if there's such a thing). I keep on thinking about this - I wish people can see our sadness like it is an open wound... you know, that it would bleed, than others will know we are not healed and tell us to do this or that.

My best analogy is that after bleeding for a while, it stops bleeding and it's forming a scab. Another way of saying it is that your emotional side is probably starting to adapt, which is a good thing. You will cry again, just like I do.

I remember that feeling. And at 3 years and 3 months, I feel like that all the time. I think it is my way of avoiding any more hurt. Of protecting myself. But by doing that, I don't feel the joy in life anymore, either. Sandee

I am going through this exact same thing, and have a couple of times. I stopped crying. I couldn't cry no matter what I did or thought about or felt. I was just numb. Empty. Angry. I go back and forth through all of the emotions. Right now I'm back to being weepy and angry. That may change tomorrow however. It's only been a month for me but it feels like an eternity. I know some people on here have been on this journey for quite a while and I just can't imagine their strength. At this point, I have no clue how I'm going to make it through this. I will do it. Pat - yeah, nothing "normal" about this. I went through this feeling as well, and personally, I think it was my brain (as opposed to my heart) that decided the "pause" button would be good just about now. Just for a while. Just coast. Please don't think it's something weird or wrong, it's not. The body seeks to preserve its strength and sanity. Keep talking - Marsha

I was getting ready to post about the same exact thing. I'm at 9 weeks, and one week I am completely numb, feeling nothing, and then the next week I am weepy all the time. When I'm numb I beg to just feel something, anything, and then when I do, I beg to go back to being numb. I don't know which is worse - they are both excruciating. So you're definitely not alone.

I have gone thru this and still do when it just gets too intense. I believe your system just says hey I'm checking out for awhile and will be back when I energize. It's normal for what we are going thru. But everyone deals with it differently. Just take care of you.

I think this happens because no matter how we try, we can't make others see how broken we really are. They see the outward appearance, the one bound by the social morays we've been conditioned to follow. In modern culture we can't go around wailing in sackcloth and throw ashes on our heads to release that. We would be accused of creating too much drama. So it becomes frustrating. I have problems with people validating what I am really feeling now because it is too icky for them to consider. They say right away "it's not your fault" or "your daughter was sick and she didn't know what she was doing". Same happened when my husband died. Yes I hope that's true too but...the pain is still there along with a hundred questions. You are broken, anyone saying they understand will never be enough. Embrace not caring, that's what I did many times. It is a self-sustaining emotion, I didn't sink into total despair, in fact I actually saw myself caring about things, little things sometimes, and knew I was ok and not moving toward the point of no return. So sorry for your loss.

You are perfect with how you feel.... It may be another 3 months, before the shock wears off, and you start to think more clearly, but for now, just let it happen. Much love and hugs carla
