I avoid weddings just as I avoid funerals. I used to feel hurt when a friend would get married and I was not invited. I know the thought of that widow girl sitting in the corner is not pretty. I know no one wants to think of catching what I have. Wedding receptions are not all they are cracked up to be and I can sit in a corner in the privacy of my own house without having to make a spectacle out of myself.

I am truly sorry the wedding was so difficult. For me that is something that I have a soft spot for is weddings. Yes it takes me back to my own but also reminds me of what a incredible journey I had with my wife. I couldn't imagine not sharing my life with her even though I had to endure tremendous pain at the end. What I would do to have those 23 years back! Gerald

Thank you everyone. This wedding was particularly hard because it was his best friend's family. We have helped each other for the down payment on each others first home without any hesitation or question. They are true friends. That's what makes it so difficult that he is not here to celebrate with them.

I have chosen not to attend two weddings (AND two funerals) since my husband died, but I got a phone call from one of my husband's old coworkers. His daughter is getting married, and it will be a traditional Vietnamese wedding. We have talked about my recent trip to Vietnam so much and he called, in addition to sending the invitation... He said he and his wife would be honored to have me there, and that "all the gang" (husband's friends from work who have been SO kind to me since he died) will be there, and they will all take good care of me. I did not feel I could say no.

I am going out with "gang" for lunch this week, and am glad I said yes. They have seen me crying, a lot, and I feel like I won't have to hide any emotions that may surface.

I hear a lot of you talk about going to weddings and think that is so courageous. You all inspire me. I want to be able to rejoice with them, and to celebrate the joys of young love!

its a very complicated situation when the people you love most is front of you and you can't show your feelings to him. its a best idea to avoid everything but it is not easy. you should try to busy in other things so you dnt have time to think about your husband.

I understand your feelings. My brother got married 11 months after I lost my husband. It was the hardest wedding I have ever had to attend. I did pretty well, but have always been good at keeping my emotions hidden. What made matters worse, was one of the groomsmen's dates just happened to be an ICU nurse that helped take care of my husband while he was dying. I couldn't look at her without feeling anger and sadness. I got through it for the sake of my family.

Hugs to you, the fact that you had the strength to make it to the weeding is a big step forward. I feel your pain, but am proud of you all the same.

My youngest son is getting married in June and I know it will be an emotional time - he was so close to his Dad having worked with him everyday and also being his golf buddy. I just pray we get thru this but also celebrate the day for what it is - life going on. I know there will be tears of joy and missing the people who have passed away (uncle and both sets of grandparents) - we lost my husband 13 months ago in a freak accident and I just know he will be looking over us especially on that day.

I can relate to how you felt. Our first grandson got married within 6 months after my husband's death. I thought I was strong enough emotionally by that time to attend by myself. I was wrong. It was a "sappy" (sad/happy) experience for me. Happy for our grandson and new grand daughter; but sad that hubby & I weren't there together to celebrate this special occasion. I almost couldn't hold back the tears and ended up leaving the reception early. That was almost 4 years ago. I can say that these special occasions do get easier to deal with as time goes along. Hang in there & keep your chin up. Blessings always.
