Things That Take Your Breath Away

Just sitting here, happily enjoying some music, when a song started that brought me back to my husband's birthday. He was six years and some months older than me. I used to enjoy teasing him that it looked like a seven year difference for only a few months. It was a joke between us because when we met he thought I was years younger and he just wasn't in to women who were too much younger than him. He said I barely made his age requirement of no more than six years.

Today I realized that as he passed at 59, I'm now just two years younger. Just one of those things you really don't think about, but when you do it takes your breath away.

Any of you have that breath away moment?

I think about that a lot...my mom passed at the age of 36 and my husband passed this year at 42. I am currently 26, I think when I reach those ages it will be hard for me.

Yes it dawned on me a while back when I was looking at one of the last pictures of my wife Diane and thought, she will never get any older and she will never age beyond that picture. Even though she was 70 it reminded me of what they say about a young person that dies.

My mom died when I was 32 years old. She was only 59. When she died, of course I thought it was too soon for her to go. It wasn't until I turned 59 myself that I fully realized just how much life she still had to live. And now that Sam is gone at age 54 ... and I'm 62 ... it's pretty painful to think of how much he could have accomplished had he lived longer. My heart breaks for all the lost opportunity ... both for my mom and for Sam.

A few months ago I saw a friend I have known for many years at a barbeque of someone else. We had not spoken in months.

I asked how she was and she responded with -"it's been terrible". She then went on to tell me her husband's boss died the month before and - "he was only 60! Can you believe someone could die that young?" I just stared at her - she was well aware that my husband was 58. Then she said, "I couldn't believe how upset his wife was at the funeral - she kept crying and crying." In disbelief I continued to just stare when she then continued with, "I suppose it was because it was so sudden that she was so upset.

I'm not suire I get this. Just recently I lost a friend who was 103 and she had lost her grandson when he was just 36. Age has got nothing to do with it. We are all given an allotted time and it has little to do with the ages of other family members.

I have those moments ...I also try not to dwell too long on certain thoughts or I know I will fall apart...Like him missing so much of his children`s life as adults ...

I had one of those in October. My mother died from cancer when I was 22 4 days after the birth of my first born son, My son had his first son in Ocotber-and I realized how incredibly sad Mom must have been and what a blessing I have as I held my grandson for the first time. Wow, eye opener! She was 58 I am 59 and have so much life and love to look forward to. Can now imagine the pain and heartache she must have felt at leaving. Especially now that I myself have breast cancer and am going to fight this with all I am worth. Too much to live for.
