This community is dedicated to those who have lost a husband, wife, or partner. Anything is open for discussion here, with the hope that we can focus on grief, bereavement, life after loss, and continuing on after a great loss.
The day my husband died he had been at our daughter's home from the early hours of the morning. She had recently purchased a real (no extreme) 'fixer-upper,' and he was helping to install new plumbing. She had finally landed a job after relocating her family from another state. About lunch time, my husband called and asked me to drive over and have lunch with them. I remember that day so vividly, every conversation even down to what he ordered for lunch. Little did I know I would be calling 911 in a couple of hours hoping beyond hope that they could revive my husband.
My role in the family has changed drastically since that day. I have watched that daughter lose another job due to yet another company going belly up in this crazy economy. She has lost two jobs in a matter of fewer than two years: jobs that seemed so secure within their field. It doesn't take too much imagination to figure out where those jobs went. It sure wasn't in the U.S.
I digress, though, as I am feeling the weight of worry while watching this dear daughter try and recover once again from the slam of unemployment. Tonight she began her first class while attempting to re-create herself, hoping to thrive in a more favorable career field. It's going to be a rough year and a half while she attends the university. I've read where others on this site have run this race and finished well. I pray that will be the case for her.
Every parent longs to see their children settled, content, and ready for the future. My heart aches as I've watched her future slip slowly through her fingers while endeavoring to be the primary support for her family of two children. Heavy stuff and I sure wish my husband was here to ward off this mother's concern. As a parent, I want so badly to smooth the bumpsmake it all go awaybut it doesn't. Each day, this strong young lady wakes up and is the loving mother who forever puts her children first. I am often reminded of Kaaren (MarineWidow) as I watch our daughter struggle.
I apologize for being so melancholy, and thanks for allowing me to unload on you all. I know a new day usually brings a brighter outlook, and I also know that we have a God who guides us through the minefields of life. I pray for wisdom for all of us on Daily Strength as we sort through the challenges, facing them square in the eye determined to succeed. Thanks for listening. TJ

I'm sorry that you are feeling so melancholy, but, I completely understand! It seems to hurt us, as parents, esp. the only one left, when something hurts our children. It doesn't matter if they are grown and on their own either. As you said, God will guide us through the ups and downs of this life. He will also be watching over your daughter. Eventually, where the (2nd) door has closed, another will open. Hopefully, after "re-creating" herself, the economy will be better by then, and many opportunities will be open. Prayers going up.

I see so many of my friends, and even my own daughter, tread the financial water just trying to stay afloat.
I hope this all works out for your daughter. We, as parents, are always worried and concerned for the success and well being of our children, they will always be our babies.
First props to your daughter for her fighting spirit in trying to find a way out of tough times. The qualities you and your husband have instilled in her are her foundation that will see her through.
It is so very hard to watch our kids struggle in lifes we just wish we could wrap them in that special blanket, hold them in our lap and make the hurt go away. Todays world is so different than the one we raised our kids in. Its an ever changing economy with so many fighting to keep afloat but one thing that never changes is Gods love and His promise to provide in abundance what we need . That special blanket is still wrapped around your daughter and your family keeping you safe and He will make the hurt go away.
