I really watch what I am doing, sometimes people feel like they see
"sucker widow" when I am trying to get help, I hope I can see them..
thanks for sharing it truly makes us alert...
Anyhow, my father found someone to do the paint and flooring work. This was a person who went door to door, so I immediately became suspicious. I read that the person should be bonded, so when I met the man I told him that. He said, no problem, I'm bonded.
To make a long story short, my father wanted to hire him, so I did. I told the contractor that his hiring was contingent on me seeing his bond proof. He said he would. Two weeks later he still didn't have it. Said, he was waiting for them to send it. Guess, what. I didn't hire him. And told him why. A week went by and then he contacts me, asking for money because he'd paid to get bonded.
Can you believe that?
I reminded him that he told me that he was already bonded and therefore no money for him. He was angry, but there was nothing he could do. I had emails from him stating that he was bonded.
An obvious scam to say the least.
The interior decorator I hired did a wonderful job, but her partner overcharged for some services. I was so slow in the head that I didn't care. And then I did. I told them no more decorating was needed. Then the partner said, we'll do this part for free'. It was the basement and they wanted to set it up. I said, don't bother. I have no more money to spend. They said, it's free. So I said okay.
Can you guess the rest?
I remembered one of those judge shows on TV that said always write important information on your checks. So on the last check I gave to the decorators, I wrote 'Final payment." It was cashed, so two weeks later when I received a bill from the decorator, they'd added the basement work that I was told would be free. i immediately showed them the check that had been cashed. She screamed and hollered, demanding the money, which I refused and referred her to my lawyer. She then backed down, knowing she didn't have a legal leg to stand on.
There are definetly people out there wanting to take advantage of us poor widows/widowers. So sad.
Glad it worked out for you.
The repair people we have always used are not aware that Richard has passed on. I don't offer the info, and they haven't asked. For strangers, I'll throw in a line as to my husband working but I would be expecting him to drop in at any time out of his curiousity to see how the repair is going. If anything, it keeps them on their toes.
