Widows & Widowers Support Group
This community is dedicated to those who have lost a husband, wife, or partner. Anything is open for discussion here, with the hope that we can focus on grief, bereavement, life after loss, and continuing on after a great loss.

I am curious..... on a FB group for young widows and widowers that I belong to I have found a lot of people who have not really had a good support system as they journeyed through their grief. On this group there are also some.
I am wondering if the sort of area people live in makes any difference. What I mean is... I live in a rural area near a small town (two bars, one grocery store, one gas station and We did finally get a bank again some years ago). It happens to be the area where my late husband grew up and I have lived here for 24 years. I belong to a small church as well.
Having never actually lived in the city I really do not know what that is like, but I have heard that people are much more anonymous in big cities,
I am wondering if it makes a difference in how well folks are supported in their grief...
It seems to me that in a big city there would be more resources (support groups, etc), but also they would deal with more people who did not know their story..... in a small town EVERYBODY knows your business---which is not always bad.
Anyone have any thoughts to share on this subject? Thanks.

I find myself going places in the car and not wanting to get out of the car. I come back home and I don't want to get out of the car. I think it's the only time I spend reflecting. Chronic tiredness from Long Covid plus the immunosupressing meds for my Crohn's is slowing me down but everything just seems a massive effort. I am dealing with the paperwork following my father's death but it's not...

Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner. I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings. But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!

Any more we live in a me society, where people only focus on themselves, or may be so occupied with trying to make ends meet they don't have the strength or the time to devote to someone else.
Your immediate support system is your family, church minister/congregation, and your close friends. Most support groups are run by community oriented facilities, or churches. I would venture that very small towns would not, unless some caring person decided to start one of their own.
I live in a 55+, and most of the folks are caring individuals. However, there are others who just want to stick their nose in your business. They are the ones I most stay away from.
I'm curious about your support group on FB - how did you find it?
Have a good day.
Chris
I did think of joining the local group of a widows support organisation at one point but bizarrely they would not tell me exactly if they had a local group until I joined - so I gave that a miss.
As for the FB group... I just did a search for a widow group there. I found one called Young Widows and Widowers. This DS group has a lot more activity though,,
The reason I searched is that someone suggested I start one so I was trying to learn about "groups" was trying to start one for Christains and found these and decided I didn't need to start a new one,.
It does not matter if one lives in a larger metro area, medium city, or small town...if one is filled with their own problems and run people away and offend people then it's going to happen in any location.
Sometimes, a person just can not be "happy" or helped in any crisis.....grief or any other...because they do not have the abilty to listen or share and run people off and out of their lives by their own behavior or responses.....They and they never see that trend in their own life...they always blame the group or other people. They always have turmoil in their life but never see their own responsiblity and part in it. When you are continually left complaining about those who try to help you, you are never satisfied, reject peopole based on standards of looks or age or whatever... and people in your life have had to exit it.......then it might be that you need to look in the mirror and face the issue...yourself.
Location will not change this...and numerous options in a larger city will not change this...only the person can change their life and attitude.
I have a circle of friends and family who have been very supportive. I really don't know if we lived in a metro area if it would be any different. I think it depends on the person and how much they are involved in the area where they live. Sharon
I live in a city in a very nice neighborhood. After six months, only my immediate next door neighbors have even acknowledged that my husband has died. They came to his visitation and I haven't seen them since.... not even in their yard. Truthfully, I'm not sure most of my neighbors even know.
I'm fortunate though, I have a few good friends who are very suppportive. It's just all part of this crappy journey we are all on.
