Renting might be less stressful while you are healing from your surgery. After you are fully recovered from both surgeries that will be one less major concern you have. If you have the ability to rent a place in a new location to get the feel of the area, I would say go for it. You do not want to buy a house only to realize that the location is not what you thought it was. Perhaps you can pick 5 locations that appeal to you. Research those areas thoroughly. Research the surrounding the areas as well. That may help to keep your mind busy for a while. I hope that you have a speedy recovery.

Yes, that is kind of the plan. Actually I have 5 locations in mind already. The problem will be in getting there long enough to get a feel. I am going to have to stay calm, keep a low profile for a while, and then attempt the "great escape." It's going to take time, money, and ingenuity.

Hello! I am a widow, have been since 2008. I moved from the Coast, inland where the weather is more desirable. 'Bought a home in a gated community for people 55 years old and older. Most of the yard care is covered by my HOA dues, so don't have to worry about that. I have a 3 bedroom house, but there are smaller units. 2 bedrooms with big double garages in between. The residents here are extremely clannish and somewhat of a disappointment to me. Are you handy around the house? I used to be but it is a problem now that I am older. It would help a great deal if you had someone you could call if you needed a handi person. Rents are extremely high now a days, BUT home ownership has unexpected surprises that you might not appreciate. Good luck, let us know how you are doing!

It sounds like physically you won't be able to handle a move for at least 6 months. How long would the pre-qualification be good for? I think those things are usually time-limited. Can you take some short visits to those 5 locations to narrow them down? Researching might be a better idea until you are closer to being done with the surgeries and treatments.

Martha, I am not sure how long the certification would be good for. Seems that the word has spread, and I'm getting mega phone calls from different companies wanting me to buy here in this town even. I was basically just wanting to know my credit score and the amount I would qualify for. I definitely wouldn't buy here! I probably can't afford cross country trips in advance. I might have to lease in a less desirable area until I explore further. Which is fine. I am hoping that my next surgery will be scheduled soon. It's all a bit scary, but the plate has to come out...

Only do something major like that when you are in perfect health and state of mind.

Just an idea, but if possible you might want to subscribe by mail to local newspapers from the areas you are considering. Local news can tell you a lot about an area without ever leaving your home. On line subscriptions might also be available. Good luck, and wishing you a speedy recovery.
