This was to lame to watch until the end. I have heard this in real life and it is sad the way some peole think. Is it they do not know what to say and just talk or do they really think this is good advice?

Yep, this sounds like what so many people say. I am a widow, but as I look back to the time before I became a widow, I have said a couple of those things when I lacked the insight to say anything else. But these are pretty much the lowest blows. He's in a better place is a kind of attempt to ease our pain. Sometimes, it does. But the others are PRETTY BAD!!!!!

Yup, before we have insight in the real world of widowhood (or even in loss of a close family member), it is easy to say something like this to someone we have no idea of the pain they are in.

I was looking back at a email I sent to my older sister months after her son passed away and I am guilty of saying he is in "Better Place"

It is a comfort we think we are giving but in reality it is not. I still felt that he was because he had a tormented soul here on earth.

I still feel all my loved ones who passed on are in a better place and that is my own opinion.

When I watched this video I had several responses to it. One was the irony and humor of people who don't understand. I remember someone telling me she understood what I was going through because her son's dog had to be put down. You wouldn't think human beings could miss things that far. My other thought was how distant I used to be to others who had experienced loss. I knew they were experiencing something very bad, something I didn't want to experience, and something I couldn't wrap my head around. I probably said some unhelpful things at times, but mostly I stayed away. I avoided funerals, I was no help. Now I see my responsibility differently, even to those people who don't have a clue. They have been fortunate to miss the bullet so far, but few of us escape loss altogether. -- Most people have been taught the social skill to say "I'm sorry for your loss." People who are inappropriate should be given this cue to help them express something helpful to others. This is the most basic feeling between people during a time like this and even those who are inappropriate probably don't wish to be. They need better skills.
