Widows & Widowers Support Group
This community is dedicated to those who have lost a husband, wife, or partner. Anything is open for discussion here, with the hope that we can focus on grief, bereavement, life after loss, and continuing on after a great loss.

I’ve heard stories where widows feel like prey. I’m a strong person so I say not me. What happens is everyone becomes suspect. Which is not good either. My in laws have been distant. It’s ok I’m probably a reminder of the hurt of losing my husband. Unexpectedly my brother in law showed up. Talked about his wife troubles did not give me a chance to talk about my husband or the kids. Told me about money troubles I just listened. He left after a while. Then yesterday he called and asked could he borrow my new car. Now it’s not brand new but new to me. I still have the old car and offered him that. He said ahh well I’m waiting on a call back from my mom. Why would you even ask me? You have not really spoke to me in three months since he been gone. But you drop by to bend my ear and then ask to use my car. See me I would not ask to borrow anyone’s car because of how they did me. If something happens to the car I’m responsible for fixing it. My in laws they borrow my old car so many times when it needed repairs they disappeared till it was fixed. If my husband was here he would have talked me into giving it. I guess he was the conscience of us two. I at least smile at that. I won’t be anyone’s prey. For once I will take luxury in being the grieving widow and do or not do what the hell I want.

Old Hillbilly Wisdom:Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.Keep skunks, bankers, and politicians at a distance.Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.Words that soak into your ears are whispered, not yelled. The best sermons are lived, not preached. If you don't take the time to do it right, you'll find the...

Just sharing from my own experience.
I'm in a writing mood but do not want to high jack DJC's thread. I know this widower has dang near gone through the wringer when it comes to being preyed upon. So I'll do a post about it. Be careful out there. ~~~ Scottie
DJC, be selfish. Take care of your kids and yourself. That's the priority now. I wouldn't lend them that car. Just my opinion.
Most people think we come into a bundle when we are bereaved, and also think we are easy pickings. That's true for some of us, but not most of us. Most of us struggle mightily after the loss.
My advice is always the same: Remember that what was his/hers is now YOURS. Unless it was bequeathed in a will or you are otherwise legally obligated to turn it over to someone else, DON'T give away anything for a minimum of 6 months and it's better to wait a full year before doing so. I personally made the mistake of giving away some of Cliff's tools early on only to find later that I needed them, and then I had to replace them out of my own pocket. And the people I gave stuff to somehow disappeared when I needed help. Tough lesson learned.....
There were also some creepy instances of being hit on, too. Yuck!!
