Here in the West, strong feelings and emotions are usually avoided, or dealt with superficially, because they are so uncomfortable to accept and face. When we bury emotions like grief or anger they are still stay in our unconscious mind. It is out of the here and now, but it is not erased and will cause problems such as distractive behaviors or in form of symptoms such as anxiety and depression.
I love films and pieces of music that are evocative and stir up strong emotions, the ones that often considered too dramatic by some people. I suppose labeling feelings is just another way of avoiding them.
Film, music, art, Yoga and meditation can uncork feeling that avoided and buried. Realizing how much of those unexpressed feelings were inside and possibly caused harm can be shocking. However, when the feelings finally surface and expressed, the real healing begins.
