I have ADT. It was installed long before my husband died. Never had any problems.

My daughter uses ADT. I have Guardian. It looks like they use the same type keypad to me. We have accidently set it off a couple of times and the response was really quick. Actually once my husband did something on the keypad and the phone rang and the next thing we knew the police were there. Shows that it works. An alarm system is a good idea.

I have ADT. Got it in April just a few weeks after my husband died. I set the motion detector on at night, close my bedroom door, and sleep very soundly. The signs alone help I am sure. My initial cost was about $300 and $115 quarterly. Seems like a lot, but I do feel safe at night or coming home. However, two weeks ago I experienced theft during an overzealous interior bug inspecton while I was home but not in the room. Whole experience was VERY traumatic. Stuff is long gone so case with police is dropped. Now I plan to have NO interior inspectors, cleaning services, etc., but that will prove a problem in the future when interior needs painting, something breaks, ...

I accidently set mine off leaving for work this morning, ADT called in a matter of seconds to see if everything was OK. I think the signs do more good than the alarm but it seems well worth the money, maybe you can find free installation.

Wow where I live people still leave keys in their cars in the driveway. I am so fortunate that my neighbors watch my house. If I had to get a sercurity system I would go with ADT because that is the only one I ever heard of. Good lluck....

I use both ADT and ADS depending on the location. I am pleased with both. My suggestion would be to get more than one proposal and then compare the features. You might also look around at the other homes and see what, if any, service they use.

I have three miniature pincher's one even alerted us to a fire we had in the house. ADT was $42.00 a month here and I discontinued it when cutting cost. I asked a police officer at a neighborhood meeting one time about the effectiveness of an alarm. His response wasn't positive in favor. I suppose we could worry overmuch, I choose not to.

P.S. Here in Socal we get charged for any false alarms where the police arrive.

I used a local company, had it installed shortly after my husband passed---same keypad, same service, but it does work a little differently. I have set mine off several times accidentally. They don't call me if I enter my code and clear it within 30 seconds--which I like. The one time it went off on it's own they called the Sheriff's Dept, they were here in decent time (I live out a ways). I was actually on my way home from work and a neighbor called to say the alarm was going off. Never did figure out what set it off though, mine works on motion and heat combined. Just glad no one had broken in, everything was solid. I agree that the signs are a good deterrent---but I found that the alarm going off sent my neighbors into gear---had two over here checking things out before I ever got home--so I think it's well worth it. I like the fact that you have a different code you can enter if someone perhaps follows you through the door and makes you turn it off---that code will turn the audible alarm off but a silent alarm alerts the company that you need help. I also like the panic buttons on the keypad--one for medical, one for fire and one for police--just push one button and you have notified someone. I would check local companies first, sometimes, not always, they are less expensive---and ask your friends and neighbors in your area about who they use and if it's reliable--and what options the service comes with. All the companies I looked at were about the same price--this company just happened to be owned by a friend of my son's so I used them---it's worked out fine. In my opinion it's worth it--a little peace of mind--it helps.

I don't have one anymore...I live in "Mayberry"...but I did have ADT. It worked.....but with my dogs and 2 false alarms.....that the ADT guy tried to pass off as a spider walking across the motion detector....I had to take an alarm course through the New Orleans police department. Brought it down to 2 false alarms. One more, I'd have had to pay. The cops didn't seen very concerned with alarms going off either, but I suppose it was because most everyone had them there and they got a lot of false alarms. What I really liked though, and would like to have again, is the alarm I had that called the fire department if a fire broke out. To me that made a lot of sense.

I also have ADT. For us an alarm system is NECESSARY.

After they refused to support my old system and wanted $500 for a new one and $198 installation, I did some research on the internet. Seems they want a three year contract these days (no one seems to know why) which doesn't set well with everyone.

There is a difference between wire and wireless (can't remember why but wire is apparently better). If you are creative you can keep the wire and siren relatively hidden.

Motion sensors were part of the package so they were installed. If you have pets you don't need to turn them on.

I pay extra for someone coming when the alarm goes off.

There were many false alarms on the second sytem but they were the result of faulty installation (I had the same excuse of being set off by a mosquito).

I also pay a rental fee for a remote control which you can use to turn on the system at night or when you leave. You can get more than one if needed.

You can give a trusted neighbor your password and ADT can call them in the event you don't answer the phone and/or need to cancel a false alarm.

I opted to not buy the system. They own it. This works for me since I don't plan on going anywhere. If you choose to own, ask about taking it with you.

Because of rapidly changing technology, find out about your responsibiity/liability for system upgrades. Be sure to get everything spelled out in the contract. Find out options to cancel or change the contract before the three year expiration.

Be sure to get the rather extensive booklet of instructions.

I agree, the emergency numbers for fire etc., are very useful.

Some of my problems have been cultural but as I said, I couldn't be without it.

Congrats on your new place! My son is a security spec. for walmarts and wincos. He suggests that you talk to your police (community officer) They can tell you who they think does the best job Also response times and false alarms. Some co. send private security and not police. Then there are charges when police respond, it false. Please be aware, if someone really wants to rob you, they can disable your alarm, or have the unit tell them the code with a comp. program. Have you yhought about a dog?
