As far as I know, this is true. My sister-in-law and husband divorced after 25 yrs. and she has drawn on his ss for quite sometime.

Hi - I was interested and so I looked it up online. It says you must be married for 9 months if your husband dies. The 10 year rule is only for people who are divorced.

I don't thinkthat is right for SS as I know serveral people that were not married for 10 years and able to collect their spouse's ss but if they remarried, it stopped. You should chek with social security - they have been very helpful with mde.

No it's not true. My husband and I were married less than ONE year, I get my own Social Security Disability, but I also get a portion of HIS Social Security too. It makes up the difference of what I would get if I was drawing just HIS Social Security.

We married in March 17, 2000, and he died March 5, 2001 unfortunately. We didn't even know he was sick.

So you can draw SS being married less than 10 years if I'm any example.

If you are the current wife when the death occurs and have been married for 9 months you are able to collect his SS if you are over 60. If you are an ex wife and were married for 10 years or more you may collect his ss once you turn 60 and have not remarried.

Thanks. Not ready to collect now, and may never collect, but I wanted to know if I could. Also, I think you can't remary before age 60 and collect. Not something I'll ever have to worry about.

i cant collect not that i care much about it i recieved 255 dollars and thats it. never researched it and never cared either way.

Also I thought I was told that you must be 60 or above and not working in order to collecct your usband social security. If you are working then you cannot collect. When you do stop working you will collect whomever is higher. Does that sound right?

My understanding is that you collect whether you are working or not. I'm working and currently getting money for my daughter. I was told that when she graduated from HS - which will be in a little more than 2 years - I'll stop getting her money. But, SS told me that as soon as I turn 60 I will begin getting approximately the same amount of money. They didn't say anything about working and made a comment that I would just have to plan on going about 4 years without it until it begins again. Sounds to me like it begins automatically - but anyone know for sure?

Christine is right..When you turn 60 you can collect SS if you are not working and can only collect whichever one is more.Since I still have 18 years to work than of course when I retire my SS will be higher. So all the money my hubby paid into for all those years is POOF gone and noone can collect on it. Our children are all grown. I think it is so wrong it would be nice to get some sort of supplemental check each month.

I receive a government retirement and will be eligible to draw off my husband's Social Security account when I am of age. However, they will calculate what I would receive on his SS and deduct 2/3's of my government retirement (called an offset) which puts me in the minus column. The result is, I will not receive anything from his SS. I will receive Medicare on his account though. It used to be you could collect both but this changed either in the late 70's or early 80's.

I am not sure what policy is now, but it used to be you could earn up to a certain amount from working while on Social Security and would not affect your SS amount.

I just looked under social security and read a lot of stuff. It appears that it does not matter whether you are working or not - that you/we can still receive our husband's SS at the age of 60. That's the impression they had given me at the office too. I definitely will still be working at 60.
