Has anybody seen the movie "Up"? I went to see it yesterday with my daughter and grandson. It is one of those Disney animated movies. It starts out with two kids who are great friends, Ellie and Carl, and both wanting to have great adventures in their lives, going to foreign lands etc. They grow up and get married and like real life, they never seem to have the money to go on the adventures, even though they try to save up for them. As the years go on, they cannot have any children but are very devoted to each other as they grow old together. Finally Ellie dies and Carl is old and lonely, spending his days sitting on the front porch watching as the construction crews build big buildings next to his home. Well at that point in the movie, I was fighting back tears and wondering what all the point of this story was; then an explorer boy scout comes to his door, trying to get his "assisting the elderly" badge, and the second half of the story is delightful as the two of them end up flying the house which is powered by a bunch of balloons, and landing in a jungle in South America where they have their big adventure, complete with strange animals, a devoted dog, bad guys, etc. By the time the movie ends, Carl has had the adventure he always dreamed of, bonded with the kid, and is off to a whole new and productive phase of his life. For us who have been widowed, there was a clear message there that we still have the rest of our lives ahead of us, to do new things and be happy. I am so happy I got to see this cute movie with the great message! Some of you out there might also enjoy it.
