My wife of 50 years just died a month ago, so I don't feel qualified to give advice to you. But one thing I am going to do is volunteer some of my time to helping other people. My wife died of Lymphoma, so I signed up to volunteer time to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I am also thinking of volunteering for the Ronald McDonald House.

Also, is there a senior center in your area. Go there. There are many people in your same situation.

I would just recommend getting out of your house and doing something, anything. Best of luck on figuring out something to help.

I know the feeling but I am only at 17 months without my best friend. Have you tried volunteering or looking on Meetups in your area. It is not a dating site, it is a site where you might find somethings you like to do as well as others and meet to hike, try different restaurants, etc.. Have a look not sure what area you are near.

The above advice is good advice - check meetup.com for social groups in your area. There is usually even a 'dogwalkers group' in most places. Volunteering is another great way to meet people as whatever the cause is will be an automatic icebreaker. All charities need help, even if it's just stuffing envelopes for an hour or two.

Most city governments also have a volunteering department to either volunteer at events or help match you up with an organization needing help. Most city Park & Recreation Departments run classes and programs for adults and seniors, and they are usually free or very low cost.

If you have any hobbies or would like to try your hand at one, check the local hobby and craft stores for classes. The home improvement stores also do classes if you want to try a spot of DIY and meet people.

Sweetie, I don't know if you ever "get over" the loss of your husband. Life will never be what you had planned with him, but it still can be good. I read all of the replies and everyone had great ideas that really do help. It is just difficult to get started. You almost have to force yourself, but it is well worth the effort. For myself, I love teaching kids in Sunday School and after School Bible Clubs. Kids are so full of life and energy. I tell you, it rubs off a little. Schools have volunteer programs where you can help kids who are having difficulty with reading or math. There are also clubs like Big Brothers Big Sisters of America where you can have a mentoring relationship with a child in need of friendship and encouragement. These kinds of things help chase the loneliness away. I know it is difficult and I am praying for you.
