Oh Daria, I have also experienced what you went through. Seeing or running into people holding holds. But I have gone up to them and
tell them about losing my love & to cherish each day with each other and love more & it is amazing the wonderful responses I have gotten.

As I was grocery shopping today, I came across a couple that we went to church with in Michigan, over 50 years ago. They didn't know of my husbands passing. You know, it wasn't that bad. I am surprised. Sandee

I too know how you feel. It has gotten easier for me, but sometimes I feel cheated, but then remember how blessed I was to have had the time that I did.

Yes, the grocery store is upsetting to me too, especially walking by the deli where I used to buy John his favorite ham and cheese, and then bring samples to him. I try to avoid it because I just bust out crying, and then to top it off, the store has music piped in from the 1960's and when I hear a love song, I bust out crying again. Imagine what the video camera surveillance people are thinking.

That takes a lot of guts, JoAnn, to walk up to a nice couple and tell them that, and glad you have gotten positive responses. Whenever I see an older couple, I feel sad for them, just think that they are on the Titanic ship and one day, one of them will smash into the iceberg and leave the other one on the ship by themselves. They don't know what's coming, thank goodness. I just remind my sisters to be extra nice and sweet to their husbands, hug and kiss them and tell them they love him every day to have nice memories to remember.

I, too, have spoken to older couples in WalMart, in parking lots, in cafes - and you can usually tell if they will respond positively. I have told them I'm jealous because I lost my husband, to cherish & enjoy each day with each other etc. They usually say "we do!" and we share a few words. It has been 7 yrs. for me now, and I don't do this as often as I did earlier. Frank & I were married 50 yrs. so that's why I'm drawn to older couples.

I too get upset, we used to pick out older couples, and say "that will be us some day". Now I feel cheated, and sad. The Titanic is a perfect description

Oh I so miss holding my husband's hand. The other day I saw an elderly couple holding hands and the tears started. They are very fortunate to have each other... I attend a grief support meeting and yesterday she mentioned we have many people in our life who love us and love will be the key to healing and to keep reaching out. Don't think this heartache will ever go away.

Perhaps some of the old people you see holding hands HAVE lost a spouse and ARE treasuring the one they are now with. Just a thought..........

I had a similar situation. Don and I rode motorcycle. Actually I was a passenger. After his death my daughter and I went away for a while and there was a gentleman and his wife sitting on their bike. It was supposed to be us. I cried and my daughter froze. I was forced to tell them to savor the memories and take care of each other. I explained that I had recently lost my riding partner from cancer. I hope it makes a difference for them. Sharon
