"Hijacking"

I am new to this forum experience, but it seems to me we can all post fresh info in a new post whenever we want as an OP. So in that case, if a comment does not directly pertain to the original post subject matter, is this not considered hijacking, and thus disrespectful to the original poster? Am I being rule-bound or would this not make for a more civilized forum?

That's what has got me in trouble on Instagram and Photoshare - getting off the subject matter of the original posted pic. People can get very offensive or mad if you go off on a rabbit trail. But it is true, the longer the thread, the more tangled it becomes - and people tend to say what comes to their minds at the moment. Sometimes I find myself scrolling back to the original post for this reason -, and even to see what board I am on. I am not opposed to the idea of starting a fresh post when necessary.

Rick, sometimes it is hijacking and sometimes it is not. Often around here it is just inexperience with the forum model. Depending on the subject raised in the OP, it can also evolve in the thread. Our threads sometimes become conversational.

If it is an OLD thread that is pulled up, that's often not helpful, especially if the user that originally posted it is no longer on DS. That happens when people search on a certain phrase and they pull it up and reply on it without checking when the thread began.

It's true that if you have a subject that is very unrelated/separate from the main post that it is better to start a new thread.
