For the past 5 years (same time Dan diagnosed with ca), an adult son w/sole custody came to live with us w/2 sons, now 11 and 7. Suffered trauma while with mom & her boyfried. She abandoned them while bf sent to jail for abuse. It's been a long, hard ride, esp. w/Dan's surgeries, chemo, etc. during this time. Grandpa Dan was a steady source of comfort to the best of his ability. The oldest feels the loss more profoundly than his brother and is continuing counseling. They both are on the mend and are doing much better overall. I can't imagine anyone else in a similar situation, but if there are any w/w that can offer advice or possibly have young children at home, I would be grateful to hear how this loss has affected the kids and what can I do to help them while I am helping myself. Sometimes, it is difficult to even get up in the mornings to send them off to school. My son, their dad, spends just about every minute with them when he gets home from work. He is grieving, too. Every fiber in my being is stretched to the max.

we have a 20 year old and a 10 year old. The 10 year old has taken it the best, but she is more spiritually connected, as I think children are. We talk openly about what we remember at dinner time. When we sit down to dinner, I always pray, and include sean in our prayers. Then during our meal, I'll ask each of the girls what is something funny they remember, or I'll just chime in something funny, silly or annoying, lol. Then we all have a good laugh. One thing is for sure, I want to make sure my little one never forgets her daddy sean. My oldest is quieter with her feelings, she is more of an introvert, so I try very hard to sit with her once a week, and ask her if she is ok, and if she needs anything. I try to keep the same routine going on, it gives them structure and normalcy. Going to counseling is a good alternative, and can allow them to just get out anything theyy want. Your doing everything perfect... your a good woman, and how awesome that you still keep caring for everyone. much love and big hugs carla

carla, thank you and right back at you w/those hugs! I appreciate your advice to stay in our routine as much as possible and to mention Grandpa in our prayers. It's been getting a little easier to talk about him and some of the funny stuff he used to do or say. It's weird but I could hardly retrieve any memories after Dan died, only his death and the days before. Slowly, they are coming back in small bits and I try to share them w/the boys as I too, don't want the youngest to not remember. I hope your older daughter is doing ok, too. It's good that you make time for her. My daughter who is married, calls me when the going gets rough. My middle son, is an introvert. You've reminded me that maybe I should call him and see how he is doing (moved to CO). Thanks for the comforting words. You are the best mom ever!

Thank you ' lovehertz'. I really needed your encouraging words as this morning was hectic and I had a mini-meltdown getting the oldest out to school. He has complicated issues and being oppostional was the last thing I wanted to deal with this am! I am glad you mentioned church, but somewhere on this site someone was upset and/or there are some rules etc. After many years of not attending church regularly, I found a new one last month that I have been faithfully going to. Surprisingly enough, my adult son and the boys have been going with me. I pray for the strength every day - to lead me to where I should be looking for solace and for hope. Thank you for your comments! Hugging is popular around here, lol. So here's one for you. :)
