I saw an old movie last night. It had been recommended to me as it had a lot of outdoor scenes from the old neighborhood I used to live in. I watched it with joy in my heart. Don't ask me what it's about because I literally looked only at the background shots.
The movie was filmed in the mid-seventies, so I was seeing streets the way they were when I was a teenager. I can't tell you the memories they bought back. I could practically see my grandmother standing on the porch of her old apartment and it felt like my mother was standing right next to me as we went into the old medical building.
This got me to thinking. We're not aware how much our surroundings change in the years that follows until it's almost completely different. My old neighborhood looks nothing like the way it used to. My husband has been gone for nearly three years and I'm already seeing a difference. So that got me thinking. I received so my pleasure on my walk down memory lane and it brought back so many memories of friends and family long forgotten, so why not take videos of the neighborhood my husband and I used to live in? Maybe include pictures of my grandkids and stepdaughter too. I just know that those memories can only increase in value.

That house has been torn down now, the land sold to the universtiy, and now has a paved parking lot on the soil where my husband grew up playing and where the trees and bushes and grass were lovingly cared for. It makes me so sad.
It's only natural that life should move forward and places should be made to serve the present needs. But only those who knew it in its best time have the proper reverence for it. Roads have been closed, rerouted, and cut through. Not many people can remember the old dairy out by the lake, the building of the interstate road, the huge flower nursery that was once there. Only in our memories keep them alive, unless we have pictures of some kind.
