I can't believe she didn't take a moment to consider what she was asking. What an idiotic question, and especially so while speaking with a child who lost a parent.
One of my hubby's favorite sayings about "stupid" was, 'I give you books and give you books, and all you do is eat the pages'!

You could always e-mail her and tell her what you thought of how she handled it.
miss my husband everyday for the rest of my life, I will never get
over it, I will always have a sadness in my heart, I will never be the
same person
Do I still miss my husband? Not a second goes by that I don't think of him, long for him and wish he was by my side. I don't suspect that this will ever change.
Thrusting a mic in the face of a sailor who had broked down into tears and she was still yammering away and asking idiotic questions "Can you tell me what you are feeling...right now"

One of my biggest memories of watching the news about 9/11 was when the head of the Fire Department was announcing to the news media the number of firemen who had been killed - he could barely even speak and looked like he was on the verge of collapse. He then asked if there were any questions and I think it was the first question that was "how are you feeling right now?" The fireman was incredulous and said "how am I feeling??" at which point several other firemen came and put their arms around him and someone yelled at the guy for asking such a stupid question.
