My wife passed away mid July last very unexpectedly. Just about everything in the house is as she left it. Except for the kitchen. I needed something to do just after she past and decided to set up the kitchen as I wanted. Cuz I cook so much for myself (not). Just to keep busy. Since have been meaning to arrange the house how I need it now with her gone. Can't bring myself to do it. All her make up,curlers, hair brushes, everything she used to "put her face on" every morning is still right where she left it. Clothes still in closets on the same hangers she last hung them on. I know she's not coming back. However I can't bring myself to get rid of her "stuff". How did some of you feel about and handle this situation?

It's been 4 years and yes I have gotten rid of some items by revisiting those items at times until I could bring myself to do it but also by making it a must because of wanting to do a project. For example I put his toiletries , shampoo, soap , deodorant etc in a bag so that I could freshen-up the bathroom and repaint. When the job was done I did not return those items and eventually put them in the garbage (The new items went to a shelter) because I had manage to tell myself that these items were not him.
I also kept telling myself that I did not want to create a shrine while not wanting to just erase him.
By making the blankets I will always have part of him with us.
It's a step by step journey to chose to let go of things , the biggest one this year is the house we bought 10 years ago. It's another crossroad to pass on this journey and I know that once through on the chosen path I will be fine, getting there not so easy.
His wedding band, was melted with my set two years ago and made into a pendant I wear all the time...
Take your time. I know I am.
I'm a griever and a counselor, and I can tell you personally and professionally, there is no time line on any of this. You have to move through this grief at your own pace. People talk of stages, but it's not a linear path. It's a tornado that knocks you around, and you never know where you'll be from day to day. You may be in a quiet and peaceful place one day, and in a turbulent storm the next.
I ache for my husband, and that's why I joined this little, anonymous group. I need to connect with other people who are missing someone. I need a community that understands this crazy journey.
If you feel a need to move some things, maybe start with the things which seem a bit easier--things that are less personal, or that she didn't have her hands on each day. My Danny built me an armoire, so I decided I would keep whatever clothing fit in there--believe me I have it packed!!
