Books for children (and adults, too)

I've seen a few posts lately requesting help in explaining death and heaven to children. I'd like to recommend two books that may help answer some of the questions your children & grandchildren have.

There's a wonderful book that helps explain death to children, and it's great for adults, too. The book is short, but meaningful. I recommend it highly . . .

Waterbugs and Dragonflies: Explaining Death to Young Children
by Doris Stickney and Gloria Ortiz Hernandez

Here's another good choice . . .

"The Fall of Freddie the Leaf: A Story of Life for All Ages"
by Leo Buscaglia

Both are available at most bookstores and also online at Amazon.com. Although the books were written to help children understand death, I've read them both and found them comforting.

Another good one if you need to explain to grandchildren is "Where Is Grandpa?", by T.A. Barron. Amazon has it, or check with your local library for it, and for other books for kids as well.

I have an autistic son who is high functioning, but a number of other issues, including developmental delay.,cause him to operate on a level associated with children much younger than he is, and he's in his early 20's. We talked about his dad's death, but because it is difficult for him to stay focused (unless he's obsessing about something - ugh!) our conversations would start but not really take hold. I found a book written for young children and it helped him focus and express himself as it offers room to draw. Can't say I like every page - we went through the book before he started working on it himself,and discussed pages he would skip. Long story to get to the point - the book is "When Someone Very Special Dies" by Marge Heegaard. We are going to start counseling together and I plan on bringing this book with me.
