I am such an idiot!
I use a small-time bank that I can walk to, and the ladies are very friendly. It is not a busy place and very homey. You can even take your dogs inside and they give them treats.
I made the mistake of telling one of them my husband (who she met) passed away.
Well, today, when I tried to deposit some checks made out to him, they said I couldn't sign and deposit them because he is dead. Even though it is a joint account.
I am kicking myself for saying anything to them. I have another bank and will try there....I have such a big mouth. Grrrrr.
Other woes: I hired an attorney to probate some complicated Wills (my husband's divorce lawyer, actually) and just found out my two stepdaughters hired their own lawyer to represent them. So now I have to get my own lawyer to represent me.
This is irksome because I've heard that opposing probate attorneys often get together to prolong the settlement, because it means more money for their pockets. thus diminishing the Estate.
I do not want this to be contentious, but the girls are getting advice from people who may be after their money...
Does anyone know if our joint bank account is part of the Estate that they can somehow have rights to??

As for the banking . . I got shut off also. I had my own bank account and deposited a few checks I received (legal or not?) into my account as "deposit only" without any problems. I needed the money to pay bills and it wasn't much, but enough to help me get by the first month. Good luck w/ your other bank.
BTW, were you appointed as P.R. (personal representative)? Again, I suppose this goes back to the question "did he have a will"? If you were named as P.R. . . go to the Probate Court and get the appointment. With this paper you will be able to access all of his banking, etc.
