I am glad you were alerted to the problem so you can straighten it out. I was told that the majority of identity theft involves people who have died.
The site http://www.bankrate.com/brm/green/cc/crdt2e.asp says that federal law requires that each credit agency must give you a free credit report each year and how to do so.
Also, I sent a copy of my husbands death certificate to the three major credit bureaus. They have now marked his social security number as deceased so if someone tries to use his info to open or transfer an account it will be flagged.

Have you tried going on-line to Transunion? I have had trouble with them in the past. Have you tried other insurance coverage for your car?They may not all require your credit rating. I have American Family and they have never mentioned my credit rating. Keep plugging away and get that credit rating from Transunion. Good Luck..Hugs

Yes, ALL insurance companies check credit now. A new law that is a few years old. I knew about it myself, but so far no troubles there.

Trans Union I believe does not have customer service at all, but as long as the letter has their letterhead, then it should be ok. I would when I sent it, send it certified, or overnight it, so it HAS to be signed for!!!! Then you have a paper trail of sorts as well, which should help you feel a little more secure in sending.

There are mix ups in home address' all the timer, which are usually just a clerical error, but VERY WORTH checking out!

Also, for the future, try that Lifelock service that can be purchased also through the internet. They monitor all your credit and will alert you immediately to any shananagans that happen with people trying to open an account in your name.

the service only cost 100.00 per year and is MORE than worth it as I myself am finding out!!! they also monitor all three agencies for you! AND represent you if there is something that happens!

I'm sorry anyone has to deal with these issues on top of everything else. John passed away Nov. 2010. when I went last year to have my taxes done, someone had used Johns information and filed there taxes with his ss#. I was not the one in the wrong but had to mail everything that pertained to his illness his death, and prove that he had passed away. I was floored on top of everything else. It took additional time and energy to deal with all of this. I notified all of the credit agencys and had a freeze put on his info and ss#. It sucks that as soon as the death certificates are printed everything about them is posted on ss death index. everything. there is no wonder so many people are violated even in death. they are some sick people out there. It sounds like it is the insurance co. that needs to straighten the address issue on their end, for their paperwork. There are usually always mistakes on credit reports! This gives a lot of people jobs to do. I would not worry, unless there are reports of trying to get credit - and most importantly, someone trying to use your husbands medical in.! I have LifeLock and anything out of the ordinary flags my account. I had my car broken into and mail stolen, and my medical went through no less than 6 people trying to use it and sell it. For a very small amount$15 they can give you one less thing to have to worry about. -G
