I had a similar sort of experience on a trip years ago, we were traveling in our custom van and saw another van way off the road with bodies everywhere, it struck me that a few moments before that they were just traveling down the freeway like we were and crash they were dead. Life is so precarious!
That reminds me of a time Joe and I had been down to the college town where our youngest daughter lived. We were in Joe's big F150 truck, because we had gone down to move our dtr from one house to another. Its a 2 1/2 hr. to 3 hr drive from our home.
On the way back I was almost asleep when Joe yelled ~~ I jumped and he had his arm thrown over me. I looked ahead ~~ but, nothing was in front of us. He was yelling, "look out!" and about that time I saw a little sports car come flying by on my side (we were in the last rt. hand lane ~ and it was not on a lane, just the side of the road). Just as it flew past us, it hit the guard rail which caused it to spin out and hit the guard rail on the other side of the interstate; therefore, flying back in front of us and hitting the guard rail AGAIN~~ then zooming back across the lanes into the median and hitting a tree ~~ dead center!! All of this happened in just a few seconds. Joe had been trying to keep from hitting the car as it spun from one lane to another. We got stopped and he jumped out, telling me to call 9-1-1. He ran across the lanes (everyone had stopped) to the car to see if he could help.
The 9-1-1 operator said people had been calling for the last 10 minutes or so about a black sports car driving on the outside of the lanes, or in the lanes and flying past everyone. The guy was drunk and probably doing 120 mph. A woman that was in the passenger seat had to be taken by ambulence. Her side of the car was the one that kept hitting the guard rail.
A State Trooper called us a couple of days later to hear our version of the wreck. He said the man driving was an illegal alien, and so drunk that he (trooper) thought he was going to be drunk~~just smelling the alcohol before getting the guy to jail. The woman was pregnant and was hurting badly when she left, both in her back and stomach. I never heard what happened.
Joe and I talked about how quickly we could both have been gone. Just seconds away from death ~ right there ~~ that day. Then, we discussed how that was so true everyday, especially when out on the roads. Joe drove an 18 wheeler, so he faced it every trip he made. He thought about that a lot too, esp. when he saw a wreck. He saw many of them out on these interstates, and helped get some people out, several times. Many times those wrecks haunted him after he got home.
Joe was gone in a snap of the fingers, but, thankfully, it wasn't in a wreck. I was with him, and glad that I was, even though those thoughts were daunting ~ later on. Sudden cardiac arrest is so fast!
Something like that just makes us think about how close we can be to leaving here.
Glad you weren't involved in the wreck.
Hugs, Joely
Just so you understand what I mean, right now, if you're grieving the loss of your spouse/partner spend time taking care of you and healing your broken heart. Love yourself and be patient. Grief is a very hard job to recover from. Take the time you need. Remember loving you is essential to share it later. Sharon
One moment Denny and I had such a perfect life. The next the doctor says he had an almost 7 cm brain tumor. Instant HELL! Yeah...life changed in an instant. Even though we had five and a half months together after they found the brain tumor, it was him trying to be as positive as possible as he went through the hell of treatment and meds, and operations, and tests, and me in a panic to save his life. It was like the worst nightmare (and it was our life). Then he was gone.
Marjoe says it best..., WTF?
Here I am 4 days short of 22 months and I still can't face more than one day at a time. I'm doing well with the one day at a time. But when someone starts talking about forever, well, just can't go there still..
hugs..

Like standing in line forever when someone had to go get an item price check - I just settle back and think at least I am living....
