So I was at work the other day and this woman walked by my store. I wouldn't have thought much of her, she looked like the average mall crawler, except my step son was behind her. My jaw dropped. I'd never met or seen my husband's ex before and there she was, the woman central to so many horrible stories of abuse, both of my husband and my step children. Keeping that in mind (and I do believe my husband and stepdaughter were being truthful. Neither made/make up stories like that about people.) I couldn't believe how ugly she was. I'm not only talking physically, but emotionally too. Just all around ugly. At first my initial reaction, which I shared with my step daughter, was "Holy Crap, he went from driving a 60s Volkswagon to a Ferrari!" broke some of the awkward tension inside myself. Looking back on it now, I'm grateful my husband died having me there to love him. Despite his many flaws and mistakes, he deserved to be happy and loved in his last days. I'm glad I could give that to him.

Who knows? Maybe my turn will come one day.
