Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of my husband's passing. It seems like yesterday, and yet it seems like he's been gone forever. Does that make sense?
The first six to seven months were horrendous. It seems like a nightmare now. I cried, I sobbed, I couldn't focus, I was a mess.
I saw a therapist, and I took an antidepressant for five or six months.
But, you can't mask your grief, you can't hide from it, you have to get through it.
The end of January I went to Mexico for two weeks.
Last weekend I went to New York City.
My doctor tells me he's proud of me for traveling, he laughs when I tell him I have "widow brain".
I'm getting used to my new life.
Last night I sobbed, thinking of last July. But the crying is much less intense than it was in the beginning. Of course, I miss him VERY much, but I also know he wouldn't want me sitting around crying all day.
I finally cleaned out my husband's closet, and donated his clothes to the Vietnam Vets. I kept a box of his t-shirts to have a quilt made later.
I want to let the newly widowed know that it WILL get better. You will find a way to cope, and you will find the strength to move on, even though it seems impossible now.
I have depended on my HOPE and my FAITH to survive the past year.

I like your idea of donating his stuff to Vietnam War Vets. My hubby did something in that war, but he never would talk about it...I tried to pry it out if he got a little tipsy, but that still never worked!

My dear husband was a proud Vietnam Vet, even though it changed
his life forever. When friends would say what was it like to serve
in Vietnam, he would say ..."Unless you have been there, you have
no idea." So true, and amazing & I say the same thing about losing
him !!!
I miss him so much. He was my rock & soul mate. For him, I will be strong as he was as a Veteran & a Police officer. Be strong
Kgray41, that's what I did, too ...trusted God. Every day I say, "Thy will be done".
Kkg17, the Vietnam Vets has always been my favorite charity. It took me almost a year to open his closet, but I did it!

Michele, I did the same thing ... one step forward and three steps backward. It takes time, dear .. lots of time. But you'll get there, day by day it will get better.
