i went to Vermont and Montreal and Quebec with my daughter, her husband, her mother-in-law and 2 and 4 year old grandchildren. It was a 100 degrees when I left southern California, so I didn’t quite pack the right clothes. I ended up buying a little coat in Vermont (but it was cute, so that’s okay!) We stayed for a week in the Trapp Family (Sound of Music fame) Lodge. I shared a room with my grandson and the MIL slept in the living room. So I didn’t have a place to read or get on the computer by myself! In Montreal, we had a great hotel room along the St. Lawrence River, but I shared it with the MIL and two grandkids.
Being back with my dogs and having a big house all to myself is very nice! I am getting used to being alone.
Did I miss my husband on this trip? Yes and No. I had pangs of sadness now and then, but was pretty much on the go the whole time, as my daughter planned a huge itinerary of places to explore and eat. My husband would not have wanted to travel with the kids. There would have been tension if he were there while the little one was screaming. While I enjoyed being Grammy, I think one of the highlights was when I treated my daughter and SIL (MIL babysat) to a fancy dinner in a French restaurant. We had a 7 course Tasting Menu with matched wine-- something that my husband would have loved. We toasted him. Got to be adults...
With my kids especially- actually everyone- I do not like to show any sadness, even though I am feeling grief. The hardest part was that the MIL kept playing a “You Are My Sunshine” video for our granddaughter. I always told my hubby that he was my sunshine, and when he wasn’t around, my skies were gray. That song always reminds me of him. They had no idea I was close to tearing up each time they played that on her iPhone!

I can't get too sad around my kids either. When I do they start to get teary and then we're all just blubbering messes. It's good to share a good cry but I'm afraid if I started with the kids we wouldn't be able to stop.
