Hi there Everyone! This is lengthy as I do not know whom to tell, as my own family does not believe me!
Here a rough overview of what has happened:
I met M (let's call him 'M') just over 3 years ago on Match. Initially I thought I had met my 'Soul mate'. We both are very much into cycling, the outdoors etc. Also I am German and he did speak German (very rare to find in the US ;) ). Anyway: for two years we had a long distance relationship (FL and OH) where it was mainly me visiting him. We did spend summers together, where we went on some great cycling trips. I also took him home to Germany to meet my family, who LOVED him.
Looking back to the beginnings of our relationship, there were many 'red' flags, which I did not recognize, as I was not aware of what was happening.
Just to highlight one, which absolutely confused me at the time: M has two dogs. The older one he has had for years. As she had puppies, he was going to sell them and HER (she is very hyper and it was more for that than the $$)! At the time we almost had an argument over this, as I could not believe that he would just sell off his pet of many years and companion which helped nurse him back to health when he had a heart attack, a few years back. I looked around for someone who would want to take her, to make sure she would be going to a good home. One of the girls I worked with, father owns a big ranch in Texas and loves dogs. He agreed to take Nina. When I told M, he had changed his mind. A few months later, he accused ME, that I wanted him to sell his dog!!!!!!!!!!! Only when I reminded him about the argument we almost had over him trying to sell her, he seemed to REMEMBER! I was utterly confused........even thinking: DID I SAY THAT? .....but I KNOW, I did not.
Anyway, two years into our relationship, I sold my house, quit my job and moved to OH.........he had flown down to help me drive the moving truck (I drove my car). We stayed overnight in Georgia and the next morning he had, what today I would describe as an anxiety attack, telling me, he couldn't do THIS and I had to go back to FL. Back? Whereto? I did not have a house any more nor a job- all my things were in the moving van. I finally got hold of his sister in law (on ph) who managed to calm him down. I was in shock and deeply hurt, but I figured to continue on and figure it out from there.
Once in OH (VERY rural), I initially took care of making the 'bachelor' pad a home (which M had agreed to): I painted all the rooms, modernized all electric (very old home)....etc : over the next few months, I never heard the end of what I had DONE to his house. He was watching me over weeks doing it! I finally said we had to lay this ONGOING argument to rest and I would change EVERYTHING back to the way it was, before I moved in. M's response: 'Oh no! Don't do that!' I said to him: 'What do you want me to do? You don't want it the way it is, but you don't want me to change it back either....I cannot win.' Many more things along these lines happened: I was only allowed to open windows a certain way. In winter he wouldn't let me turn on the heat and in summer not the AC. I could not be the last one walking out of the house, in case I would change anything, also opening the door to the room my poor cat was in, which he HATED! At one point we went to a counselor (which he picked). Once she started to point out certain things (may be three sessions into it), he told me, he would not go back, as he did not need two women telling him what to do. When my niece was about to visit from Germany, he took the house key from me, the night of her arrival and let me drive by myself in the middle of the night to the airport, when I did not know the route. When we took the dogs out to play and they started to bring the ball he threw, back to me (without me calling them, even standing away on the side)...he got angry at me.
I also found a box filled with swimsuits and pantyhose under the bed one day and when I asked him about it (I thought they were from an ex-girlfriend), he looked at me and said: I wear this! In the meantime I have also found out that he sends pictures of himself dressed in womens' underwear and pantyhose to whoever is interested, online. He has also contacted HUNDREDS of women online, trying to befriend them.
Throughout this relationship I was getting more and more stressed out, distraught, couldn't function properly any more and was questioning myself, if I was really doing all these things, he was accusing me off. One time he got Shingles, another time he had a cough he could not get rid off....and it was MY fault.
When I finally went to see a counselor, he listened and the told me, that I was dealing with a Sociopath, who had also Borderline Personality and schizophrenic tendencies. He told me to leave asap, as I was in a dangerous situation. When I told M I was moving out, he was happy to hear that. He also did not help me with ANYTHING (moving my heavy furniture out etc......his friend helped and let me store my things at his farm). Only once, during my moving out, he came into my room and nonchalantly said: 'I see you are making good progress. Are you planning to take all the outlet covers and light fixtures you installed. Let me know how much you want, I pay you for them.' (ALL the things he did not want at one point, he now wanted to stay???)
I left one day, without saying good-bye, blocked him on FB and drove away with my car and a few of my things. The rest is still at his friend's house, as I am TERRIFIED to go back there.
In the meantime he has stayed in contact with my family, who thinks he is just a great guy (when my niece was visiting, I obviously did not burden her, she is 16, with what was going on, yet was at my breaking point).
8 months later, I still cannot function properly, also knowing that he is convincing MY OWN FAMILY, that there is something wrong with me. I tried to tell my sister and brother in law several times.....but I guess they do not believe me. I also went to see another counselor, where I am now, and she told me pretty much the same thing, I had heard from the first counselor. She told me I was one of the 'lucky' ones, as I got away alive. She said: 'THEY won't kill you, but people often commit suicide after having gone through this kind of mental abuse. The womens' shelters are full of victims of Sociopaths.'
Also I do not see myself as a victim, as I did everything out of my own will, I cannot understand, WHY my family does not believe me and WHY they never ask what actually happened. I am trying to heal and have a very hard time to associate with anyone who cannot understand what I am going through (most people can't).....BUT my own family?

Welcome to what us survivor/ victims call "The Smear Campaign"- He is hitting you where it hurts. Taking advantage of the distance of your family, getting to them first, and painting the picture. How easy for him to behave for a short visit to Germany and trick your family for a week or so.
I can't even imagine how painful it must be for you to not have your family's belief and support. Do you have other friends here in the states that you can lean on? All I can think is that you eventually saw through your abuser's mask, and your family will do the same. In the meantime, you really should do your best to surround yourself with a support network who believes you and can help you heal. Trying to get over the deciet and abuse while trying to convince your family you are not "crazy", is a recipe for disaster.
Please keep seeing your therapist- she sounds as if she is knowledgable on the topic and a great anchor. You are braver and stronger than you give yourself credit for..
thanks for responding.
I have found it quite challenging to keep a support group, when you have nothing to give. The average person cannot understand the issue at hand...which then, in return, makes me question myself.
At the moment, all I want is PEACE and QUIET.
I have planned to ride the Great Divide Mountain Bike route this summer, as I feel that is what I need to be able to center myself again, feeling my own strength again......yet, knowing M is in contact with my family (as they, like most others, cannot understand where I am coming from, so the less support I get, the more I isolate myself.....and YES, I have read lots of books, websites, CDs on the subject and know that this is not healthy. I just have run out of steam.
I also doubt very much that they eventually see him for who he really is, as he is the most charming, intelligent and helpful person there is....on the surface, and that is all they see, considering the distance.
When my niece was visiting, she witnessed a charming, warm man and a distressed, on edge aunt. What do you think, she reported back home? He also told her (a 16yr old girl), that I left without even saying good-bye, while he was at work and that the relationship was very difficult.....'as you saw' (to my niece) - now if that does not make me look like a lunatic to a 16yr old.
I just would like one person to believe me and when you ,yourself are not in your own right mind, how do you do that? Only someone who has lived through similar challenges will be able to do so, I think.
As I do not have health insurance right now, I have not gone back to see my therapist (saw her 3 times).
Right now, I will have to rely on myself and may be you guys here :)
Thanks!
I am so sorry for your situation. I wish I could say I do not know the feeling of what you are experiencing, but I know it very well. I have experienced a similar situation with my own family. They also are a distance from me. My family seems to go back and forth between supporting and believing me to thinking I have gone off the deep end. I am not allowed to tell them how I really feel or what is really going on in my life anymore. I just have to pretend all is well and talk about mostly superficial things. This has gone on for well over 3 years. People like "M" that you mentioned are master manipulators who love nothing more than to shred the lives of people who see them for what they really are. Impression management is their strongpoint. Most genuine people are not concerned about impressions, but about reality and being authentic in their interactions. This puts you at a great disadvantage as there are no rules for P's, N's or S's. I understand your exhaustion as I am in the same boat. It is great that you are still cycling. Getting out and being able to do the things you love, even if they are solitary might help you to assimilate back into a group of people you can trust. Although, I am not sure as I have not been able to do that myself yet. I have major trust issues and also know that so much of what continues to go on in my life seem unbelievable to those who have not experienced it. To be honest, I am also worried about any of my possible new friends becoming a target of my ex-P as well. I wish you well and pray that you will regain your strength. I am so sorry for what you have experienced, but happy that you were able to get away from it.
I belive Your every Word.
Hang on here!!
Best of luck and lots of love

Cycling has been my savior, as when I am on my bicycle, I forget all the other stuff: kind of have to, in order not to get hit ;) It's like meditating, while you are actually active.
Sanctuscubed, if I can give one advise: stay physically active, first of all outside in nature. I also signed up to climb Mt Kilimanjaro next September, at least I know I'll be physically strong, while my mind is still lagging behind. May go and train for a 5k or anything else sporty worthwhile: it'll build your self esteem, health and you will look good, working out ;).........and you will make nice friends.
Fiskebollbukta , exactly: once the door closes and you there is only the two of you, things change. There were times, when I think M knew that something was not quite ok with him (asking me to 'please help me!' which then, of course made me feel bad for HIM and I was trying my best to fulfill this task....and change never lasted very long!)
I felt guilty for getting more and more angry and resentful, which is just a normal response. I read BOUNDARIES IN DATING, which very clearly explains how these feelings come about. Sometimes I just feel that I have the tools, but do not know how to apply them.
Jo, yes NO CONTACT (....and I did not for the past 8 months and do not plan on it YIKES!). That is another thing he is telling my family, that I do not have any contact with him (which he really only tried to contact me once for Christmas and I did not answer text....and felt bad - bad for not being able to wish someone I spent 3 of my life with, a Merry Christmas).
Another member in a different thread has posted this link to a site, which I had not seen before and this is EXACTLY how I am feeling. If you haven't seen it yet, check it out:

Thank you everyone! Your compassion made me cry :)
My ex never really showed any signs to me of being a sociopath other than the compulsive lying, which she was very good at rationalizing. It was only after she had discarded me that her true nature came out. That is part of why others don't believe me. They weren't privy to the surgically precise emotional, sexual and mental manipulation I went through for attention, money, ego boost, whatever.
My ex is fortunate that I never pressed charges for two acts of theft from me, and the only reason I don't bother is that she would enjoy the drama and chaos, and I'm sure she would retaliate and concoct even more stories about how horrible I am, etc.
These people are absolute poison. Once the mask falls and they don't need you, any interaction with them is a highway to hell.
I'm just only to glad to say I figured it out. And it was right here on this forum that I figured it out! So thank you to all of you who shared your stories.
"They commit their violations in private and then create a web of confusion. They blame the victim, speak of being the victim and create smoke & mirrors to divert from the Truth. Predators are cagey and tricky individuals. They only show their demon side to the child or adult that they violate. They make a conscious choice to enact their violence in private. And, on the most vulnerable among us- children. Silence protects them. If it comes to light, the rest of us are asked to side with or against them."
~Tanya Steele
It took me long enough to understand that I was not getting over a normal relationship.
But you have to think about the family you came from and why you attracted a SNP in the first place. Chances are, your parents were like that. Why would they validate you when it's better to invalidate you for whatever reason.
Even my therapist probably won't validate me once I tell her I figured it out. And that's when I will leave therapy.
I figured it out without their help. If they aren't going to help me by doing anything but saying "That's nice, now what about you?" I'm just going to quit talking.
I read an article today about what constitutes the prime victim of a sociopath. Hang on and let me find it. It was very helpful.
High goals
High achievements
High intelligence
Spirituality
Morals
Dreams
Goals
Cooperative, forgiving nature (codependent I guess)
Empathic
Good career
Vulnerability, loneliness
Neediness
Coming out of another abusive relationship
Lack of community
Wanting a loving relationship
That kind of sums it up. I was all of the above. Easy pickings!
Now he claims that I, yes ME, I mentally abused and manipulated HIM and that I could not cope with life. My counselor told me one time, that they (Sociopaths) lift you up and the crush you, to then start the same cycle again......and your head is spinning. He also said that by trying to help them, they feel better (short lived) and you feel devastated. It truly felt like living with Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde: you never know which one is going to show up. In the end YOU doubt yourself, YOU think something is wrong with YOU. "Did I really do that? May it's me? May be I am wrong?" and the demon is satisfied.
