Thanx for the reply. My boyfriend isnt trying to push my button, he's just an idiot to be quite honest. He has no idea what it is like to feel passionate about something- anything for that matter. And I can tell you he wont go for the "you buy/cook your own meat" thing. I think if we had met and I was a vegetarian and I layed down that law in the first place it would be different and who knows we might not still be together. But I could try and see what he says.
Years ago I let my adult son move in with me and his meat eating got nasty fast because the grease gets onto the walls and splatters on the floor and I often had to wash his dirty meat dishes and the meat gets onto everything and it smells too.
I really wanted to have a celebration when my son moved out except I chose not to let him know how happy it made me.
So you have a BIG problem with your BF.
congratulations for remaining a vegetarian in spite of the difficult environment.
But the result of me not eating almost no meat is that we buy less of it. So, what I do buy higher quality (local, more humane) It's not perfect, but it certainly helps.
Diet is kind of like politics and religion...it's something that people get incredibly passionate about and they try to overwhelm people that disagree with them by using stubbornness and loud voices.
As for your bf, you can draw the hard line and force him to do all the meat handling himself (heck, he might rise to the occasion), or you could relax and give him a chance to maybe catch up to see your point of view. Like I said earlier, people get very defensive when you poke at their worldview.
And if it comes down to it, you might need to decide whether your relationship with him or your passion for your diet is more important.
Good luck.
Underneath all their sarcasm and bullying, meat eaters do feel guilty about their bad habits...I'm convinced of it. Why else would they go out of their way to harass vegetarians? When you give people a guilty conscience about something, they tend to get hostile.
I give it right back to them. I told a doctor I was going to have a carrion-free Thanksgiving, and he really turned against me after that. Good riddance, he wasn't that good of a doctor anyway.
I've been a vegetarian most of my life, so I've had to deal with tons of abuse. The best way is to have your own barbs ready to go, so they get tired of being jabbed and drop the subject. Like when they talk about the myth that humans evolved on a diet of meat, I tell them that all our close relatives among the mammals are vegetarians...except for one. It's a primate that eats a lot of meat, so maybe that's the direction meat-loving humans are going in their evolution. Those meat-eating primates are called baboons.
