Help.. I am one to read the ingredient list on everything I eat. If I am unsure of something, I begin researching it. On a vegetarian product, one of the ingredients was Ammonium Biocarbonate. The word alone seems unhealthy but seems to be in many things.
Anyhow, as I start researching, I see that this ingredient is also known as Harts Horn which is derived from the shavings of Red Deer antlers. Now, I am going to keep reading and researching but I wanted to ask if any of you know anything about this ingredient. I'm hoping that it is similar to rennet in cheese and that there is a non-animal source that some manufacturers will use. If so, how can I identify that it is non-animal source?

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is made in a lab as iis ammonium bicarbnoate. I don't see any instance of it coming from an animal.

ammonia, carbon dioxide and water are easy to obtain and animal horns, not so much plus are costly.
no way they use them in process anymore. the article says that it used to be made using animals.
