Hi all,
My sister had her first chemo treatment Mon and didn't get really bad symptoms until last night. She stubbornly still went to work but then had to drive to doctor and wait outside office for them to open to get help with the pain. She said it was the day after shot that really killed her - the bone marrow is attacked or something?
So I'm hoping you all might have some advice as to chemo and shots. Do the shots always hurt that much? She was also allergic to two of the bags of chemo - once with ice pick in the chest (her words) and once with sunburn like red on arms. Does it get easier?
Also, she says everything tastes funny. Any tips of good foods to try? I know everyone is different but maybe there's a starting place?
I'm so worried about her. I live in MA, she's in FL. I flew down for 3 weeks for her surgery (complete hysterectomy) and helped her out. But I'm also sick - I have CP (cranky panky aka chronic pancreatitis) which has been acting up (along with liver and kidney stone). So I'm supposed to fly back down Nov 6-20 to help out again. I'm just praying I don't end up in the hospital again - Please NO! I need to help Her.

I'm sorry your sister is having to go through Chemo. It sure isn't fun. What kind of shot did she have to get? I was very fortunate that I didn't have any bad reactions to the Chemo drugs themselves. I had Taxol/Carbo. What kind is she having? Maybe her doctor will need to adjust her dose or change the chemo drugs since it sounds like she had a pretty bad reaction.
As far as food...all I could really get down was cottage cheese and cooked vegetables. Sometimes a fruit smoothie would go down ok and didn't taste that bad. It's true that everything tastes funny and you really don't have much of an appetite. She just needs to get down whatever she's able to keep her calories up.I think that plain pasta or rice might work, too.
I really hope that her treatment goes well from now on and she's able to go on to be totally healed . Blessings to you both!
