Urinary incontinence is the involuntary excretion of urine from one's body. It is often temporary, and it almost always results from an underlying medical condition. I'm bipolar (my condition is considered mild), 55 years old and diagnosed 5 years ago. I've always known I have a mood disorder, but never really dealt with it until recently. I've had a very successful career and looking forward to retiring with my wife of over 30 years in the next 10 years. She's always known I'm different, but stuck by me through all the difficulties I've caused.
One thing I've kept a secret from everyone is that I suffer from urge incontinence for periods of time when I've got symptoms of anxiety or depression. I'm okay when at home or the office, but when I travel, which is often, I can't hold my bladder. It's always the same. I don't feel the urge to go and then all of a sudden I've got to pee. I try to hold the urge until I can find a place to relive myself. Not too many accidents over the years, but now is a different story.
In the past I could handle the urge, and I had time to find a place to relieve myself. Now the pain to hold is excruciating. Used to be that I could use a moderate incontinence pad to allow some relief and buy me time.
I try my best to control the flow, but I've had to resort to maximum absorbency diapers. For now this is my only remedy.
My wife recently found my briefs and I came clean. A huge relief, but obviously a big shock for her. For the moment she doesn't want to deal with it because she is preoccupied with her mother's health issues and I've got to admit she's been dealing with mine for a long time.
Sorry for the long post, but this is the first time I've ever communicated about my situation. I don't want to take medications because I'm comfortable with the incontinence diapers/briefs. No way on surgery unless it is cancer.
Is there anyone out there who is experiencing the same thing? I've done a lot of research on incontinence and I found mental stress can be a factor. I can say that all the episode I've had over the years can be attributed to stress. At this stage in my life it just seems to have gotten to a point where I feel it is permanent and I've got to learn to deal with it.
I'm in good physical health, other than my mental issues and the mood stabilizing drugs I take. If don't feel the drugs I'm taking are the cause, but if they were I would not stop taking them because the benefits outweigh the incontinence.
I'm going to schedule an appointment with a urologist this week, but as I stated before I don't think it's physical.
