i would like to know why some people in medical, like nures-doctors find it hard to understand why young adult need to wear diapers.i have ben to few doctors/urgent places and found it was kind odd that i was wearing a diapers.i was there for the ful/bearthing problems.i told them my medical problems like epilepsy, back pain, migraines they said ok.but when i told the i also had urinary incontinence they gave me a strange look.i didn't know what to make of it.if you are from the age 20 to 50 and are in diapers some of the people in the medical field think it is strange for you to be in diapers unless you are over age of 65.one other thing is that urgent care center/doctors office don't usely have adult diapers on site, few maybe but they mostly have on hand are baby diapers.i would like the group opinion on this. jamie

They just don't get how common wetting is by day or night among the worldwide population.
But Nurses and aides on the other hand were a totally different story. I had Some that when called into my room to help me with the bathroom and they came in and found out I was in diapers, said and I quote "why the hell are you in diapers you aren't a baby or elderly, you need to get up and use the toilet cause you should not be going to the bathroom in a diaper." At first I just was embarrassed and then as the years went on I would tell them off or put it in perspective for them. I had to nearly beg for help from some to get a diaper changed. They wanted me to do it my self even though I could not use my legs or get out of the bed on my own. I even had a few that insisted I use the Bed pan over a diaper. I would sit there for ever and not pee in the bed pan and then they would get me all situated back in bed and ten minutes later I would wet the bed or my diaper. That usually enraged them and they let me know it.
But then there were nurses and aides that were so sweet about it. One night shift aide who I had come to know from years of frequenting the floor would come in every couple hours(even if I was asleep) and check my diaper and bed. She would then proceed to change me and be so nice about it. I have to say she was the best ever. I had a few others that were really cool about it and even tried to make me feel better about it and joke and talk with me while they changed me.
I have had so many different reactions and the people that react well are always remembered and I let them know how much it means to me that they were nice.
They really have no idea what it is like to have to depend on diapers like many of us have to. When I become a nurse in a couple years I plan on being as nice and understanding as I can be to all my patients no matter their situation. Because I know how much it means.
Yes I know this is long. I get long winded when it comes to how people treat those of us with Incontinence issues. But Jamie I hear you and not every one is that way. You come across some nice ones here and there and it makes all the difference in the world.
I certainly wet the bed as child as I remember our nanny putting me into terry nappies and waterproof pants aged 5 or at least I remember being very embarrassed by a relative seeing and commenting on the fact that I was still in nappies!
I guess I grew out of it and then when I was about 11/12 and at prep school it started to happen again very occasionally, which meant for crinkly waterproof sheets and the occasional report to matron. She was very understanding. I remember being mortified my first year at public school when it happened again. Aged 14 I changed schools again and was now back at home. This time though it was more complicated as it was not a subject I felt able to discuss and would go to great lengths to hide the incidents of wet beds and my attempts at protection, which comprised using a bath towel as a terry nappy and plastic carrier bags with the corners loped off as waterproof pants and a bin liner on the mattress..Not wholly successfully it has to be said! Then I think I discovered that a small local pharmacy sold Sandra waterproof pants, which were a good step up! Washing and drying was a logistical challenge, with the space behind the radiator in my bedroom much in evidence.
Again I seemed to grow out of it. I had the occasional problem in my late teens and early twenties, more often than not if I had a few too many beers. So resorted to using disposable baby nappies under waterproof pants.
Then aged 26 I fractured my neck playing rugby and that was when things really changed. Over about a year I started to wet the bed increasingly often until it was every night. I cant for the life of me remember how, as we did not have the internet then, but I found out the details of an incontinence clinic and there met a fantastically helpful and understanding nurse continence adviser. Visits to specialists followed and many things/drugs/appliances were tried, but in the end the damage had indeed been done and so it was then that I started to wear adult all-in-one disposables. How products have evolved over the subsequent 26 years! Though quite why we still have to cope with leaks is a little irritating.
Now it just became a way of life and in the intervening years Daddys special pants were accepted as the norm. Then about 6 years ago I noticed a worsening with increased day-time problems often coinciding with when my back was painful (and at times of high anxiety too). Two years ago it was pretty much adult nappies 24/7. By now I knew that my back was a real mess thanks to many years of active participation in various sports and quite a few bouncing around in armoured vehicles! Spinal surgery eventually followed a raft of other treatments. But my back was well and truly knackered and the resultant lack of bladder control a consequence.
So anyway, here we are now, and it is Tena Maxi 24/7. Offices are my worst environment as I do not look disabled but need the extra space to change wet nappies. Followed a close second by NHS hospitals who a) did not stock the TENA products so I had to supply my own and b) were not very discreet when it came to helping me change or for that matter particularly prompt in attending to my request for help with wet pads/nappies and beds.
Other than that I just get on and manage it.
It is great to have this forum. Thank you.
They have things they can try so you don't have to wear a diaper. An MRI will never find the problem.
Even my urologist asked why then he found my week bladder muscles while doing a cystoscopy he wasnt rude or giving me any faces. The nurse was so nice that she helped me undress and acted normal to me wearing diapers. She even helped me get changed into a new one.
My experience has been great so far.
