I moved to Atlanta earlier this year and after the hell of the move itself, found a temp to perm position that, because of outside circumstances in late July became at not so perm position. Company sold itself to an outside hedge fund and all temp and contractors were sent packing. Back to the job hunt. Found one after about 4 weeks but it was in Central Atlanta and the commute made life a living hell. So learned a lesson - KNOW THE AREA first. So, back to the job hunt again and about 30 min ago found a good one within commute area. Whew.
Commute can really affect your quality of life. We live in a city of about 6 million. My husband works for a government agency that has offices all around the city. He was not happy with the office where he was working, so he asked about possibly transferring to another office. They offered him a transfer that would have required a 2-hour commute by public transit or one hour driving. Right now his commute is half that. He couldn't even imagine spending 4 hours a day at times just getting to and from work. He'd probably drive most of the time, but would have to take public transit 1-2 times a week. Plus the gas expense would have been significantly higher than now.
So, he decided to stay where he is. We kind of wonder that if the administration did it just so he wouldn't complain any more about wanting a transfer. They probably knew he wouldn't want to take that transfer, but they can now say, well we offered you a job in a different office, but you turned it down. At least the guy that was the biggest annoyance where he works now was sent to work at another office so his situation is somewhat improved.
