Unemployment Support Group
Recently unemployed or frustrated with the job search? Unemployment can affect more than just the bank account - it has a negative effect on motivation and self-esteem, even sense of identity. This community addresses the challenges associated with unemployment and how to cope.
I took another job recently from a temp agency. I hate it. So finally I started getting calls from other places. Tomorrow, I have an interview with a kind of job I will like, for less money but I will have a life again, and some money, and will enjoy it. That's what is important now.
I am older than you and whether they say it or not, they do age discriminate, but you can't prove it. Even McDonald's. Have you seen many women in their 40's or older? Usually just the manager.
I would also hire unemployed and older people too.
I talked to a lawyer once when I was in Criminal Justice classes. He said he would rather hire me than some young person who had dates, kids, marriage problems, partying and not showing up. We are stable, we don't have the obligations the younger people have. And we have a better work ethic.
Job hunting is really draining and demoralizing. I know completely how you feel. I really hope you find something soon so you don't have to deal with the job search much longer. Take care!
A friend suggested a very explicit career path I could take, which pulled to the front what spirit I had left. I vowed a long time ago to never turn to that no matter how bad it got. I have two parents who love me that would give me everything they had if it kept me from doing that.
One day, if I ever get to the point where I'm the one employing, I'm gonna be the employer that takes extra time to train an employee who needs a chance, rather than taking the easy option.
The whole 'you need experience to get a job, but you need a job to get experience' paradox needs to stop, because not only does it stop people from getting started, but it also traps people into one career path.
I just had an interview yesterday and the person interviewing me agreed it does exist. I did comment that it was good to see women working there over 40, even up to over 60. She said they like to hire them because others won't. So I hope to get called back and I get the job there.
I also got a call for another interview this Friday. I am happy that finally I am getting calls from all the applications I have put in over the last month. I now have a job I hate, but I make money til I find a better one. It does happen, just takes time.
I am not a fan of online applications. You never know if they are seen or not. Or when. I like taking them in, handing it to a real person, so you know it was received. These two interviews were both from online applications. One I just did the other night and got a call 2 days later, one I applied 3 weeks ago.
I hope I get a call from one of them soon so I can work in an area I like and a job I would like more than factories.
