Hi all. Captain-M. I have been a Computer Contractor for around 20 years now. I find that contracting can have advantages/disadvantages. In my situation, I have been using temporary agencies for too long now. I decided a few years ago to get both a trucking license (fixed body, not transport) and forklift license (in Ontario, Canada). However, most places I have applied to require experience. Now I am in a catch-22, damned if you do and damned if you dont. Getting occasional general contracting work. Even minimum standards for computers are constantly changing and getting worse as time goes and contunuously need updgrading (or "life-long-learning"). I have used employment councelling but I find they have limits on how much "support" they can assist with. I would prefer getting out of contracting if I can and get stability now with permanent employment, now that I am now in my mid 50's. I even find "networking" useless. I find even new citizens gets better treatment than a life-long taxpayer. Hmm. At getting at a breaking point.
45 to 65 isn't like it was 50 years ago.
Seamus is right but I know how you feel, not everyone has that opinion. I know I'm passed up for opportunities for younger, fresh out of school young'uns with less experience and for less pay. Unfortunate, but true.
