Recently unemployed or frustrated with the job search? Unemployment can affect more than just the bank account - it has a negative effect on motivation and self-esteem, even sense of identity. This community addresses the challenges associated with unemployment and how to cope.
To give one and all here some hope. Up in NYState I was a self-employed consultant-contractor with computers and had a nice, albeit smaller than I would have liked, income but it was there. My wife, retired, decided in January that moving to near our grandkiddies in Atlanta, GA would be a good thing. That plus a horrible winter and higher than hell taxes proved the motivation. In January we spotted a nice little house and put our New City NY home on the market. With the grace of the Gods it sold in about 4 weeks and we got near asking. OK, so good but for ME it meant abandoning EVERYTHING totally. I gave most of my business to a consultant I worked with and owed favors too, and on March 17 we headed south where it was really nice and I had ZERO income whatsoever. True, I had a partner but I began contract job hunting with a total vengeance. Found a seven week Windows 7 Migration project that began 2 days ago so AT LAST have something. Whew.
Advice - it is damn hard out there and my success is short-lived to be sure but it is a start. And Keep HUNTING anyway, something better may come, will come along and after 7 weeks I am back where I started anyway. GOOD LUCK.

I have been freelancing sporadically since I lost my job and I definitely feel better when I have a project going on, My self-esteem is better and I don't have time to let myself get frustrated about my situation. And of course, the money sure doesn't hurt.
If you impress them, it could lead to better things. Maybe they will need you for more work in the future, or they will recommend you to someone else that needs your services. Most of my freelance things have come from recommendations from others I have worked for.
