I have two questions for parents of twins:

1. How long were you able to breastfeed (if you did)

2. How old were your babies before you started cereal and/or soft foods?

My girls are a little over three months old, and I am nursing and giving formula both - since my milk production is no where NEAR enough for them, and when I give them bottles they always want a little more than one. At night I have been sneaking some cereal (a couple of tsp in a 6oz bottle), but that is it. Should the be ready for some cereal by spoon or applesauce or something?

i was in the same situation as you... nursing the feeding formula, but neither boy was good at nursing, no matter what i did so i turned to pumping. i just recently gave that up and they will be 6mo at the end of this month. i started solids around 4mo, but had to stop because one boy was teething and the other liked solids too much that he wouldn't take a bottle. looking back i think i started too early. i still haven't started them back up on solids. i was going to start this week, but one of the boys came down with rsv and so i am going to wait until he feels better. just my personal opinion, but i feel solids before 4 mo is way too early, unless you are adding cereal to a bottle. but that is my opinion for my boys. you need to talk to your doc and come up with a solution between the two of you. good luck...

I am still pregnant with my twins, but i intend to nurse for two years if possible. I nursed my son until 15 months when he decided he didn't want to anymore. So i have some advice though, i hope you don't take offense to it. When you give the babies formula it keeps them fuller longer and therefore not at the breast to stimulate milk production. So if you want to keep nursing them and get your milk supply back up i would either pump between nursing sessions to trick your breasts, or feed the babies more often until the supply comes back up. I had such a difficult time with my son, so i learned a lot from the lactation consultant. It's possible to do both of course, but if you wanted to exclusively nurse i would hold back on the formula. As for the cereal. There have been so many changes regarding solid food. When my daughter was little, it was start at three months. When my son was a baby it was start at six. Others say wait until they are ready, meaning sitting up, and able to spoon feed. I don't think it really makes a difference, as my mother-in-law cereal fed my husband when he was barely a month old to get him to sleep longer. Go with what works. I am sure dealing with two babies in the middle of the night is a whole different ball game then one.

I did a combo nursing /bottle feeding for the first 4 months. I didnt make nearly enough milk for them either so i usually pumped and mixed it with formula because it was simpler that way. I stopped pumping at 4 months because i was LOOSING MY MIND! I never put cereal in their bottles but we started spoon feeding cereal at 5 months and then adding in fruits and veggies into the cereal a couple weeks later.

They are seven months and they eat 8oz in the morning then 7 oz and food for the next two feedings and 8 oz again at night. Not sure if thats normal or not but our dr says their weight gain is good and they are normal for their age.
