Turner Syndrome Support Group

Turner syndrome encompasses a number of chromosomal abnormalities, of which monosomy X, is the most common. It occurs in 1 out of every 2,500 female births. Instead of the normal XX sex chromosomes for a female, only one X chromosome is present and fully functional. In Turner syndrome, female sexual characteristics are present but underdeveloped.

Discrimination in the job market

People with Turner's syndrome are often forced onto disability or s.s.i, I think they call it in the U.S. because of discrimination in the job market. Because I was discriminated against in the job market I think was partially responsible for the failure of my first marriage. My ex got sick of being the sole bread winner and we could not build a financially stable home in order to be able to adopt a child. I work now part-time and have faced discrimination from some clients. I work as a psw. Some clients don't think I can do some of the duties that they need a psw to do. I am sick of the b.s. I get sometimes. Would these people rather I sit home on my ass on disability? My ex did not understand. He got a job through a contact of his father's. I did not have that.

I am very sorry to hear that you struggle in the job market because of discrimination. I can relate to you on the level that I often get judged based on my height too. My profession is teaching, at the secondary level. This means Middle School and High School. I very rarely stand taller than the students I teach. I have to work hard and prove myself to have a big enough personality to maintain control in a classroom when I go in for interviews. I almost always get the question of, do you find large numbers of students or being in a crowded classroom intimidating? It's silly to me, because I can do everything a normal height person can do and I'm not that far below average. Thanks to GH replacement I stand at 5 feet tall.

Still, I feel the most discrimination comes simply because I'm a tiny woman. I actually had a boss that used to call me sweetheart or, even more demeaning, kiddo. I was 19 at the time, older than the other girls waitress at this restaurant but I was only one I ever heard called by such "endearments". I try not to let it get me down though. I just go in, work hard and do my job. It doesn't take me long to prove I'm worth my salt.

I hope that you'll find the same thing happens when people give you a chance too. I'm so sorry to hear that this has caused you so much trouble to the point of it effecting you on such a personal level. No one should ever feel discriminated against like that. If you're ex couldn't see that and couldn't understand then it is his loss. I've always been of the opinion that if someone can't love me and accept me as I am then they aren't worth my time. Anyone who's ever really cared about me has shown me acceptance. Hang in there and stay strong. Know that you aren't alone in this struggle.
