Long, sad story short - I lost my baby girl to miscarriage in February. I always had regular cycles before the pregnancy, but since the miscarriage I've had continuous bleeding. Sometimes like spotting, other times heavy bleeding for weeks on end. I was checked to make sure the uterus was clear. I really wanted my body to straighten itself out. I figured it would if I gave it time because it worked so perfectly before and I did not want to take hormones that my body would have to deal with on top of whatever was going on.
I want to try to conceive again. I hoped I could be pregnant again by my due date, but it's getting close and my body isn't cooperating. I finally went to the OB 5 days ago and explained the bleeding and emphatically that I wanted to ttc. Without getting any test results or wasting much breath, she told me she suspected it's anovulation and to take 1x 10 mg provera for 10 days, and then start regular bc pills for 3 months immediately afterwards...... I told her I didn't want to take bc because I want to conceive and she acted like I was being unreasonable and didn't offer any alternatives.
So my questions are, has anyone tried provera to get their cycles back to normal - I mean normal without drugs? Isn't provera supposed to make you have your period - so shouldn't you wait for that rather than immediately start bc pills? How will taking bc pills which are supposed to suppress ovulation help with anovulation?

My re never put me on bc though. When I was to start my first IVF cycle I used it alone.
if you want to get pregnant I'm surprised they didn't just offer a minimum dose of estrace combined with the provera. I would always ovulate with a minimum dose.
If I remember provera is a progesterone supplement, thst's why is usualy triggers your period. I would have believed you needed the estrace if you keep spotting during your cycle but since most BC will increase your estrogen, that's probably why your ob suggested it.
Frist of all I am so very deeply sorry to hear about your baby girl. There is no up side to a loss like that, but know that the baby you will soon have and love would not be there if things had turned out differently. That will give you some comfort in the future I hope.
I recently was prescribed Provera due to anovulation. I took it for 10 days, stopped, then got a full normal period 4 days later.
I am certainly not a doctor but I do find it extremely strange your doctor would say to start birth control immediately after. It just seems like an overkill of things to take. But then again, also strange to induce a period if you are already bleeding a lot. However, if your bleeding has subsided a bit, I would take the Provera and only the Provera to try to induce a withdrawal bleed that may jumpstart your cycle again. The 10 days of false progesterone may be just what you need to stop bleeding then the lack of it will give you an actual period.
That's just my layman's advice ;)
When proscibing Provera they generally prescribe for a few month's worth so you can always give it a try, wait 35+ days (be 100% sure you are not pregnant) then try it again with BC if that's what you choose to do.

For the record, BC really screwed my cycle up. I was on it for many years and I didn't have a normal period for over a year once I went off. I don't think that happens if it's just a few months. People get pregnant while actually taking the pill all the time!
Don't let your dr bully you, if anything find another dr within the practice for another opinion!
