Low Saturated Fat Diet and TN

Being like so many on here, I have Trigeminal Neuralgia and am at my wits end. I just found an article discussing a study published in 2013 which relates fatty foods to TN. Apparently this idea is internationally known to help sufferers of TN and a study was done in the United States. The objective was to determine the effectiveness of low saturated fat diet (LSFD) inpatients with Trigeminal neuralgia.


96% of patients with TN, 71% with TN2 improved their pain level


Hospitals, nutritionist and now with the KETO craize, we are being taught that fatty foods are actually good for you. Well, I have been increasing my fatty foods and I am starting to think there is a link between my diet change and my flare ups.


Has anyone else heard of this LSFD diet and has it helped?

Hello Jemlea. I was diagnosed with TN-1 about a month or so ago. Mine began a couple years ago but spontaneously disappeared (no idea why). Ir recurred right after Thanksgiving 2018. This time it didn't stop, but got worse, so I ended up seeing a neurologist in Jan. and getting on medication - which I hate.

I'm very naturopathic minded, so I've been looking for ways to heal/put this into remission and ran across the LSFD last night - that led me here. I've been doing keto off and on for almost 10 years! So low saturated fat is going to be a huge change for me. I just got back from the store buying all the new things I'll need going forward to keep saturated fat under 10 grams per day. All I can say at this point is, I'm looking forward to the journey and to having hope that maybe I can kick this awful disease.

Is the LSFD a different eating style. I will look it up, but thought I would get y’all take on it. I have been suffering with TN since December. I just had three days of peace, but today I could just jump.
I have had nerve block injections and am on some seizure medication and Lyrica. I am just not so sure what the medicine is doing. I have the worst anxiousness and my hands have started having little convulsive fits. Has anyone else experienced these odd issues?
I am relatively new to TN issues so I am not sure what I am looking for as far as medicine side effects or exhaustion effects from being in constant, unknowing pain as I never know what is going to hurt. I went to eat dinner last Friday and the first nite inspired what felt like about five cavities in my mouth. After clearing up the tears it brought I had some ice cream and left my plate for someone else to enjoy.
