It helps me if I keep myself busy, and not be stationary, but of course I have to sit down sometime. At these times, I do the same thing as you. I wear a glove. I mainly pull when I am sitting at my desk or laying down. I begin trying to control the pulling on my own, but that usually doesn't work. That's when I slip my glove on.
I hope this helps
Good luck and God bless!
I too find that what usually makes me not pull is staying busy. I catch myself pulling when I'm doing schoolwork, regular work, in my bed or when I have any type of stress-related issue. After 19 yrs, I'm still plucking & it sucks. To answer your question, I usually pluck when the urge is very bad. I catch myself in the act but I still keep doing it.
If you are alone and find that you can't stop yourself from pulling, I recommend taking a shower. There is something about water washing over me that takes me out of that place of pulling. Doing some pampering treatments helps me as well.
Paint your nails....you don't want polish all over your hair or eyelashes while your nails are drying.
Put on a beanie, hat or bandana. Make your hair unavailable to you.
