Questions about starting MTF hormones

Hi Everyone :) 


I have a couple questions as I get ready to start Estrogen as a 50 year old MTF, yes!



1. I'm in the process of saving my sperm in a sperm bank in case I wish to biologically father a child after hormones start.  Any idea of how long male testicles generally remain fertile sperm producing once estrogen and T blockers start?  I believe it's not instantaneous.  Can I still boost my donating a couple times in the next month after I start on hormones, or should I not go there at all until all sperm can be collected?



2.  I've heard there are health risks (blood clot increase chance) and diabetes increased risk, among other things.  Those of you who've been on hormones and also know of MTF's on hormones: what's the truth in actuality versus scare tactics to cover a doc's but from future lawsuit.  How common are those side effect health risks?  I gotta weight if hormones are really that risky or risks blown out of proportion.  I'm healthy otherwise, but don't want to shorten my lifespan by taking things.



3.  I'm excited and nervous about getting my female body going.  Ocasionally, it passes through me: do I really need to do hormones to feel my womanhood?  Is it typical to feel 100% sure one day and 80% sure another?  I may well be gender fluid, but think I'll feel best in the MTF body.


4.  Can I try out hormones' effect on my mood and body for a few months and stop if they're really not needed?  But once I start, I am feeling I'll really be happy to continue.  Anyone have experience there?

Hi Jenn, I'm a pharmacist and there is an increased risk of blood clots when on estrogen therapy. (Increased tremendously if you're a smoker.) Premarin used to be one of the most popular drugs on the market for ladies on hrt but is no longer so due to the data. With that being said, each person is going to be different. If you're healthy in most respects, an MD may have no problem starting you on hormones. (eg no significant family history, non-smoker) I can't speak for them. I wish I could tell you more about your other concerns, but I'll have to leave that up to the others in the group. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

The only thing I can say to you is to find a lgbt clinic in your area they can stead you in the right direction. They will ask u some questions take blood work and go from there . You have to realize that every person' s chemistry is different meaning they will have try out certain drugs to make sure there aren't going to be any adverse effects. So its best to be under a doctors supper vision. It takes time, even to balance your hormone levels.. good luck
