it is kind of a hard question to answer. For some the answer to when is the best time is never, for others its today. that really depends on you and your situation. You will need their help regardless of living on your own or not because likely you will still be under their insurance and all. Due to that they still have to be willing to pay the bills. Transition is not cheap by any means and as such you will not only be needing to support yourself but to be able to finance all the medical costs and social costs incurred in transitioning. In my case, 32 was when I came out to my parents. I would have liked to earlier but I grew up when it was unacceptable to be trans period. for you it is really going to depend on the overall situation. What I can tell you is that the world is entirely different when something is knocking on your door, than it is when you are completely ignorant and its way far away. Your parents may actually come around. They may not, all depends on their belief on what it means to be a parent. If it were me in your shoes. I would probably start wearing more male clothing, cut my hair short and such, and be as close as I can without saying anything to them. Focus on my schooling get a good job and all and then let them know once I am on the path. You may not wish to go that route, but it is the best I can do to answer your question. Well your parents are going to find out anyway, you cant just get rid of them from your life, in case they dont like your life choices, well i mean, your probably can, but you probably don't have any money for treatment, and "its dangerous to go alone", well not dangerous, i was copying a famous line, but it is harder to go with out support. My mum worked in a college, (im from the UK btw, so its different to what it is in america), anyway, she had a trans student, and she would sometimes talk about work, and she would call them a he she, and things like that, and although she wasn't the most offensive when talking about her, my mum was quite insensitive i would say, and that made me feel extremely uncomfortable, and harder to come out. But when i did come out she was fine with it. Now my mum wasnt totally the most ignorant person, and she wasnt super phobic or intolerant, so i can see its different, but maybe what they need to be able to understand trans people is a trans son. And if your parents do love you, i dont think they can really do much in the way to stop you, but i dont know your parents, and they might just chuck your out your house or something. Ftms have a pretty high chance of passing, in general, so, it doesnt really matter if you cant get on medication at 16, but of course you probably dont want to be stuck in your body for too much longer, i know, i dont as well, and of course the longer your leave it, the harder transition is, not just from a hormone stand point, but also, if you have a job, or a lot of work, or end up in a relationship, or get other responsibilities, i think it becomes harder. If you want to discuss some stuff, i am open, sorry i have written lots with out offer a real solution, its hard with out too much context of your situation. I came out when i was 15, a very similar age to you, so i have been their before. And in terms of coming out, because i know it can be a barrier, think of a time in the near future, where you will have the opportunity to talk to your parents, or maybe just one of them, and tell yourself, YOU WILL, tell them then. A slightly easier option, is to type it out in a text message, leave it typed, but don't send it, and do something else, and when you come back, just click send, forgetting what the importance of the message really is, pretend your sending a smiley face or something.

it's a saying if you are happy your parents are also happy you should always remember this and make all your decision taking this in mind. And never let yourself down

I believe you should wait until you can be independently self-supporting. Homophobic and transphobic people can really surprise you in terms of their ruthless disregard for your rights and feelings. I've seen people turn their own children out on the streets and literally disown them for not conforming to what the parents perceive their gender to be. Getting thrown out is not so bad if you have a safe place to go, but you don't want to end up homeless. If your parents are religious and phobic about such things, that puts you in a high risk group for harm and/or being thrown out.

Always remember: What other people have to say does not matter, because you are the only one who truly knows your own mind and feelings on this matter. Making yourself into the person you were meant to be will be the best gift you can ever give yourself. It is a path that will take time, energy and money to navigate successfully. The one thing you can never risk along the way is your personal safety. Human beings can be narrow minded, and you never know how cruel they can be until you've exposed yourself.

I advocate that you get a job, save for a car that is in your own name, develop a plan for how to take care of yourself. Plan for the worst and hope for the best.

I agree with Gutted. With homophobic/transphobic parents you really should wait until you are financially independent before coming out. What are you gaining by coming out now? An idea that seems good to you at 16 will probably seem silly to you in 4 years. That's my 2 cents.

When I see you guys saying that my parents will love as long as I'm happy, it just breaks my heart. I came out to my mom (who was like my only best friend who was non-toxic) and I talked to her about it a few times. Some thing she has said to me have made me cry myself to sleep, and she doesn't even realize the things that she says are hurting me. The most two most heart-breaking things she said to me where that she called me the son she never had and never wanted and she asked me where she and my father went wrong when raiding me. It pisses me off when we talk about this topic because she doesn't understand any of it and she refuses to understand it. I've asked her if we could both go see a professional about this and she told me we'll see, Thoughts? P.s. I have recently applied for a job.
