I came out as transgender in 8th grade (to my mom and my conservative aunt who immediately disapproved when I told her and prayed for me to get that nonsense out of my head and be a pretty girl. In front of me.) Anyway, my mom doesn't even like hearing the word transgender, so I decided to transition as soon as I turn 18. The US is not good on transgender issues, so I plan to leave and go to Canada. Does anyone out there know if it's okay to transition while in college, and if so, a few colleges who won't judge?

I'd look into PFLAG they have great resources you might be surprised at how many transgender people are in your area. And they have monthly meetings and youth groups of other transgender teens and a ton of resources to look into for help on dealing with things that may come up.

I came out to my parents when I was 6yrs old, and dealing with kids in school, grade levels for that age group. As others posted here so far about doing some online research at https://www.pflag.org/ however things to keep in mind, if you move to Canada, then your current resources on colleges might be different.

there really isn't anywhere that is more "good on transgender issues" even up in Canada the public largely look at it not to much different than here. The only difference is their insurance will cover it. That said, they have government officials and public parties who would love to see that removed. So really anything you would face here, you will face there. As for college.... No one is going to really care. Generally in college people are usually worried about their grades or partying to much to care what anyone does. So I doubt to many are going to really worry or cause issues. Sure there are always the jerks and even in Canada the bathroom rules are you will still have to use the men's room till surgery, but yeah, I don't think you will have to much trouble as far as college goes, here or there.

College is one of the best place's to transition. This also depends on which college you are going to. Most of the state colleges are great places to transition. College is all about learning and accepting and mostly dealing with different issues as you grow up. Alot of colleges have LGBT area's and services too.

Right now US or anywhere you go isn't going to be as kind to transgender. However if you were born and raised in the US. I would suggest staying here and going to college. As you will have more perks then you will in another country for going to college.

When you do transition. Make sure to let people who you are comfortable with know. They can help support you better then you think. It's not the end of the world at college. Mostly because everyone is hard trying to pass grades then judging and looking at each other.

As for your parents. Like others have said there is alot of information out there for them to learn about it. For the most part given in about 2-3 more generations. Everyone will be more accepting and more knowledge about these issues.
